People learn by example. Apparently those you encountered learned trespassing "wasn't a big deal" from someone else. Maybe if they learned the hard way that it is a big deal and isn't acceptable or legal, they wouldn't do it again or…have even done it in the first place.

walfur,

You should invite some of us to get an Idaho cow tag and help you with your problem. I'd love to put one in the freezer.

I'll come help fix fence if I can shoot a cow Elk, dead serious. If we can make a plan for next year I'll bring my fencing pliers and stretcher and you can just point me in the direction you want mended.

Are those laws still in effect? When we caught trespassers a couple of years ago, we charged them with everything we could and I could’ve swore trespassing was one of them. I know they both paid a pretty hefty fine even after their “daddy” said he’d have his lawyers in court to fight it. These were 20+ year olds, not technically kids.
The GW was very thorough in his investigation, even though we had cell cam pics of them crossing the posted gate.

Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

I was on the other end once. Got permission to coonhunt a new spot. The owner lived four or five miles away. Followed the directions given, pulled into the field, and dropped the dogs. About five minutes after that a pickup comes flying in and a guy gets out wanting to know what we're doing on his property. Long story short, we were on the wrong side of the fence line. Two approaches about twenty feet apart. Caught up the dogs and left.

You were wrong.
Once you saw their tracks all over the place, you shoulda just went back to your truck to get your rifle, nestle into a secure hidey hole, and begun some rapid fire target practice (into a safe direction of course). Nothing rattles a belligerent trespasser than a bunch of purposeful high-powered rifle shots nearby.
No real need to talk to anyone. All a trespasser is going to do is lie to you anyway,

There is your answer ! And make certain they know the why !

It seems obvious they complained about you to the 3rd party pleading their ignorance.

Please tell ..................

LOL, I would love to but not sure some should be in print, and some is a little sketchy on how what was done would be interpreted. I realize some like the amish, been dealing with them a lot around here and not an honest, law abiding, one in the multiple clans. Lie, steal, con, deceive, manipulate, then run away (leave) with great debt and loss to us English.

As much as I dislike trespassers I dislike burning bridges. I have a land owner I border and we have had a few swipes at each other through the years. In most part I was n the wrong for retaliating and that threw more gas on the fire. Two wrongs didn't make a right and I knew that but I was stupid. We do know where the lines is drawn and we really never have a chance to talk but when he have we put those differences away.

At some point in life we may need each other. I would do anything for him if it needs too be. Not sure his feeling would be the same but I am not going to befriend him.

As for people I don't know and trespass I would talk to them and advise they never ever cross me again. I would say if it got really bad II would try to throw the book at them and law would be involved from the git go.

I have called game wardens on trespasser and they always ask if I want to press charges and I have always said know.

In 1985 when my brother and I bought our first 175 acres there was a landowner who had bought 1100 acres in the 1970's for back property taxes from the county. He was inundated with trespassers, timber theives, etc., that we had only just begun to encounter. He was known to throw lead in peoples direction on more than one occasion. Realzie times were different and he was in his 50's so he grew up handling things that were different than today's folks or the people who didn't grow up in our area.
It was Wednesday of our 9 day deer season and people always hung their deer in the tree in the front yard. (not like today when we have to hide them for various reasons)
So my brotehr and I drive the mile south to see what he has hanging, he has two nice bucks hanging, we turn around in his driveway (which could get you shot at for doing) and we see him walking down the road toward us, my parents know him well so we stop to say hi on the road. He asks how its going and how the trespasser situation is going. He then ask us "you know how you deal with trespassers don't ya?" We shake our heads and my brother says no. He states with a stone cold face: " you shot them in the leg," my brother and I look at each other, he then says "then shot them in the other leg, that way when they get into court they don't have a leg to stand on!"

Is there something of great value where they were trespassing?

We bought a piece of property that couldn’t be under surveillance without cameras and such, about worried me to death. I then realized there wasn’t anything of real value there and anybody walking around had probably been doing so prior to us owning it. Long as they aren’t dumping trash and such or starting fires, it is what it is and I don’t get too worked up over it. My blood pressure appreciates my new outlook even if others don’t.
