The weather has finally calmed down enough for me to take a walk yesterday looking for damage. I found a tree had broke off and hit my power lines and tore one wire off the pole and broke the line. I am not an electrician and don't understand how I can still have power with only one of two lines but am glad I do. I called the power company to report the damage and the lady answering the phone couldn't explain it but said since I have power to not expect to see a crew soon as they still have thousands of people without power. Other than that I only lost one other tree.

Do you have anything on 220?

220 would be from the transformer to the house.
The 2 wires along the line are 1 hot single phase and a neutral/ground.
Likely broke the ground.
Still have the power, just grounding through the earth at the house.
Guessing ...

We really need to know what power line system you are on to explain how and why. You really need the power company to come no matter if you have power or not IF you have a line down. You could be running on an open neutral which is very dangerous. Call a licensed electrician for their opinion NOW and be SAFE.

Dad figured out several years ago that when you call the automated power outage system here that if you press the number for "downed line" you get a human pretty dang quick

I just walked down to check and they fixed it during the night. God bless the workers out in the cold.

A few years back we had an ice storm come through. Left us with about 3/8" of ice and actual temps near zero. Followed up with winds in excess of 75 mph. Our pole with the transformer broke off and was across the driveway and the transformer broke open. It was about 4 hours later, but the power company arrived both a new pole and transformer and took care of it in the bitter cold and icy conditions. I have a lot of respect for those folks.

Not to take anything away from them, but they are extremely well paid for it.

They deserve the pay. Power linemen are the workforce that keep life essentials running by keeping the power on.

They certainly do go above and beyond at times.
Especially when crews go to help out after distant catastrophes.
