Good habitat and food source is key!!! A lot of cover in my area with grain, corn fields and alfalfa stands with seed pods they do pretty darn good on in even the worst years. If things get really bad I do throw out a little grain every so often to help them out. Turkeys have totally disappeared from my place this winter. I'm sure if I looked they will be where the ranchers are feeding cattle this winter.
There is also literally hundreds in the fields when driving into my place.
Here is one I harvested for dinner a few weeks ago.

I had to work for them today. Me and the dogs hunted all morning and only flushed these two. I was about 100 yards from the truck and planning my next spot that I was going to hunt when the hen went out. I guess I just don’t have the discipline to let them fly. LOL

I let the young dog retrieve the rooster out of the thick stuff, he needs the practice.

I let Raven retrieve the hen with an assist from the red dog which I’m certain she finds really annoying.

I agree. I especially applaud the PA Game Commission for their maintenance and oversight of nearly 1.5 million acres of State Game Lands, public land primarily paid for by hunting and trapping license dollars and dedicated for use by hunters and trappers. The Food and Cover Division of the PGC does a fantastic job grooming some of those game lands for small game habitat.
