You Bet SW !

Your questions and responses along with the input of others really gets me to thinking and writing.
Recalling past experiences often generates new ideas as well.
Thank you for your input Sir!

Here are a few things to consider for those that check out this thread from time to time.

Keep in mind you have to read between the lines on this thread in many cases.

Like you know, I like to get folks to thinking about coyote trapping in a different light.
I have heard many times, “There is nothing new when it comes to catching Wile E.”.
Don’t you believe it.

When you hear trappers speak in absolutes as far as method & application is concerned,
don’t automatically take it as fact. Put those words to the test.
You will find that a majority of the time they are far from definitive.

Pay attention to the things that matter. Do not get lost in the weeds as many trappers do.
The simplest things are usually the most productive. That goes for methods, sets, and attractants.
Adding more to any of the above is rarely the answer.

The tips and techniques are great to have and needed . I have learned a lot from following this thread. In my opinion if you want to be a better trapper become a student of the coyote and take that knowledge and combine it with the skills you have learned for success.

In regards to the preceding posts on gang setting, do you feel too many different attractions in an area is detrimental? If there are four sets tucked close together and each one has a different smell or visual aspect (bone, scat, feathers, ect) does that put up a coyotes defenses? If you have ever walked into a place like a Hobby Lobby store or a department store in the mall the cacophony of smells is a bit off putting. Do coyotes perceive too many combinations of smells the same way? Do you recommend one primary lure at a location and supplement with some urine and droppings i.e. "low key" flat sets? Or do you use multiple lures at different traps in a gang set location?

Great series of questions Oreamnos !

No matter what number of traps I have in the presentation, I stick to one rule.

I show the Wile E. what he expects to see and smell in that specific situation and location.

I have mentioned this numerous times in this thread.
It is one of the most crucial aspects when it comes to quick catches and snagging older coyotes.
Countless illustrations throughout this thread show flat sets using poop and urine as the attractants.
Those are the attractant choices because that is what the coyotes left behind.
They expect to see answers to their marks, so that is what I give them.

You don’t have avoidance when you show them visuals and olfactory attractants that are common to that place and circumstance.
When you show them attractants foreign to that spot you are asking for trouble.
This will not only get you a lot of avoidance, it can also put all coyotes that encounter those sets on high alert.
Putting a host of strange smells in one location can get you twenty yard walk-around passes and/or avoidance of the entire area altogether.
The same applies to visual attractants. A stark or out of place visual can really kill a set.

Keep in mind the catch circle can be a huge deterrent, but it can also be the absolute best attractant you can have at your disposal..
Learning when, where, & what to add to that fresh catch circle if anything at all takes more than just a little bit of thought.
Think about what is left in the circle and what addition would best accompany that set in that specific situation.
In a gang setting, often times the fresh set next door is all you need.

Years ago catch circles meant the death of that specific set location.
It was to the point where I would pull the trap because it was a dead spot as far as a second catch was concerned.
Now a hot catch circle is certain death in most cases.
The devil is in the details. So is Wile E.
