Been dealing with alot of thaw & freeze. Hard for me to keep checking traps every other day only to keep finding the beautiful paw prints on the pan as they seem to all freeze down. I know that sometimes for wolf traps I can use the produce bags to help them stay "water/freeze" proofish in the snow. I'm thinking of using the scent free dog poop bags with a very light cover of snow. Any other ideas that I can try?

look into pinch bedding zaggers pipe set he pinch-beds i use the mb650 and we have alot of freeze thaw and it works great pinch-bedding

Try some sheets of wax paper cut to size and press the trap into the bed with the paper underneath. Make sure it covers all soil contacts points or the frost will grab the steel when it begins to freeze and expand. I would sprinke a thin layer of granulated salt into the bed first.

Produce bags will keep the trap operational, but the dirt on top, if wet then frozen, may not give.

This is how I bed in snow. Then cover with another piece of wax paper for a pan cover.


This is very true. Assuming you don't have waxed dirt. You probably aren't going to find much for dry soil this time of year to make some, but you can go to Home Depot or similar and buy some dry, bagged play sand and make some. There are several threads on here telling you how to make it by various methods, some of which are summertime only, others you can use now. If you can find some anthills, the dirt in them is naturally semi-waxed and may be dry. Gather some of that up and it will usually blend pretty well for a top coat in the vegetation types you describe.
