Seems to be getting more popular. When I was a kid I didn't know anyone under 50 that rendered their own, now it's pretty common. My bride is making a bear lard pie crust right now.

Yes, lard (animal fat) isn't as bad for you as they made it out to be. They're finding out seed oils are worse for you. So, the return of animal fats.

bear lard does not set up like hog lard or beef tallow, it remains a liquid.

That’s all my grandparents used, they raised and sold hogs so there was plenty of lard.

Lard around here is at least four times more expensive than it was a few years ago. We use mostly animal fats for cooking.

I make a few quarts every year when I process a pig at home.

[Linked Image]

Pure lard from a pig raised in the sun, is very, very good for you. A lot of the lard in grocery stores is hydrogenated , making it a trans fat, and so is nasty stuff. Check the ingredients, it'll say if it's hydrogenated.

We just rendered the lard off 4 hogs. I started with the leaf lard and then finished with the back fat. I did 3 gallons and the rest went to the chickens.’

they convinced people fat was bad because it was expensive
they replaced it with sugar in so many things

people caught on , lard isn't bad for you Rape might not be good for you but Lard is fine.

bear , beef , pork , chicken , duck
even butter
it's natural fat

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I've cook with bacon fat or lard for year, and only real butter, father in-law had to have his neck veins cleaned out, doctor total the family to quit using margine and oils, to cook with, that was 25 years ago, and yes we see and talk with more and more people that do the same,

Walmart has jars of lard and tallow, not the hydrogenated stuff, it's expensive.

I have been buying duck fat at Walmart for several years now. I have some beef fat coming soon. Looking forward to rendering some fat for tallow for lure and bait making and lard for home use.

So many things we have been told over the years were lies from burn care, bacon, eggs, fats, minor alcohol/pot use, covid, food additives, sweeteners, meds they are still lying to this day. The world is choking on plastics but they still push plastic bags over renewable biodegradable paper. Why my guess is they are invested in plastics more than paper and the other things they promote daily.

If I have access to fat I typically render my own beef and pork lard. Local butcher shop basically gives it to me.

If I run out and don't have the time nor ambition to make it I stop at the local Amish market.

I use a lot of bacon grease...last pork butt I had I rendered the scraps for lard. it's not the good leaf fat but.....I'd use tallow if I could get it reasonably.

I have never heard the plastic bags over paper preference by any government, big or small. Quite the opposite, actually.

Just doing what I want now.

After a quick search with the help of A.I. it turns out not a single State in the USA requires plastic bags rather than paper. There are many, however that ban the plastic, and instead encourage paper or cloth.

When we buthchered the pigs we raised I took as much lard as I could get. I put lard in a lot of the baking I did, especially my waffles.

I’ve never cared for beef tallow, I’ve found the strong flavor would come through, always like pork lard a very mild flavor, used to do a lot of pork when we raised and butchered our own, but now butter gets used as I don’t have enough pork fat to justify the time rendering it down.

I only use beef tallow on beef.

Many say french fries in beef tallow is very good. I've never tried it.

We were told that too much fat was bad for us…
We were told that too much bacon, hamburger , etc was the bad guy.
We were never told that fat from carbs were actually more dangerous.
Yes, we definitely need carbs to keep our motors running… but we aren’t nearly as active as we used to be that would normally burn them off

Been to the grocery or any store for that matter and what bags did they give you? Plastic over paper has been pushed for many years unless your found a penny candy store up there. SMH

You don't need any carbs to keep your motor running, been on carnivore a year and lost 66 pounds mass energy. Arthritis in my hand and foot are gone and went from prediabetic to normal and my blood pressure went way down. Carbs are killing America.

yup grains aren't even so good for farm animals but they were cheap and easy to mechanize harvest

build your food pyramid around the subsidized food you want to offer , with cheap grains than keep people alive enough and dependent on a system that doesn't want them to live too long.

We switched from vegetable oil / Crisco / etc to lard a couple years ago. Catfish and pie crusts are much better now. A friend who has a butcher shop gives me bags of pork fat which I render and jar. Never going back to that processed garbage.
