I have a couple archery shooting finger tabs I want to modify by adding an additional leather backer layer.

Have any of you folks used one of these:

And exactly how does it work? Thanks

Other suggestions?

I have one .Used it on some horse tack .Can't recall how well I liked it .Mostly for heavier stuff than what you are doing I think .

You can ride a fast horse slow but you can't ride a slow horse fast .

I've got one. Yeah they work. A bit of a learning curve to them. They've been around for ever.
Myself, I use an awl and leather needle for my leather work. Seems like you can get tighter stitches than with that automatic awl.

For soft leather like that, a nice diamond shaped blade awl and/or some nice glover's needles would do the trick.
Like above, you can make nicer stitching that way.
