Looks like it will warm up soon luckily we missed the big snow that others were hit with boy did we get the winds but it gets the powder out of my dirt I’m waxing pretty fast. I just pour it from chest height the heavy chunks of presifted dirt drop onto my roof bell vent cover the powder blows past it making for some premium chunky dirt to wax that drains so well.
I don't like waxed powder dirt it holds moisture on top like water and flower it won’t mix or drain, it holds water after sun up here on top of the set location. The initial sift is usually from a fresh badger mound even in the winter if its wind blown it’s fairly dry enough to work with or freshly dug stuff. The first sift goes through a larger screen aluminum MTP sifter then dried, wind cleaned of the dusty powder then cleaned again with the smaller regular sifter to be cleaned again before waxing. Both sifters use the diamond type of screens.
Yes it’s a lot of work but the end product is perfect with the right dirt there’s no need to carry a sifter on the line unless the local dirt is dry enough to blend the sets or whatever’s available like mulch to blend with but it’s not that important with cat trapping. The sifted larger dirt is kept for a base under the trap I wax that too probably don’t need to do that but I do. Using the base dirt is just less waste for the work you put into the sifting process. It’s kept in separate buckets along the line for my cubbies or carried in gallon baggies to the individual set locations in my back pack.
Best draining dirt I’ve found it’s worth the effort in my opinion.
