Cool Bud, I used to raise meat rabbits when I was younger. I have often thought of getting back into it on a small scale. I've read a lot about raising rabbits over the years and have several books on the subject. The Author Bob Bennet has written a few good books about raising Domestic Rabbits, meat rabbits, show rabbits, and as pets as well. Raising Rabbits Successfully is the title of one of his books I learned a lot from.

I mostly just had mixed rabbits when I was young. Now days some refer to them as meat mutts. But I did have a few Californians that I really liked. Some Grey ones that looked like what they call Chinchilla rabbits. And some New Zealand that were white. I hope you do well with your rabbits !

Yeah I know people get really anal about breed's and feed costs and all that and honestly I'm just here like , will they breed every so often? Will they no die in the heat ? Cool that's all I need lol.

If you’re going for meat just as well go with the Flemish Giant, and do you have a buck coming or do you have a way to AI them?

I just got out of the rabbit business. Just for myself. You can only eat so much. I was the only one that would eat them. Rabbit is good, but not chicken good.

Most will say a good meat breed rabbit is superior to a chicken as table fare, me included. Rabbit meat is leaner, higher in protein, and lower in fat and calories than chicken.

When my daughters got into rabbits for 4-H and then ARBA shows I thought the same thing, Bob. But for meat production, New Zealand and Californian rabbits are far superior to Flemish Giants due to their faster growth, better feed efficiency, and higher meat-to-bone ratio. I'm going to butcher a couple fryers today! Yum!

Good luck with your rabbit project Wolfdog! btw a 5-dollar buck is the most expensive rabbit you'll ever buy (read quality pays).

My father raised them ca.1940. Grandfather had a restaurant. Father wanted to stop raising them. Gfather would go in his hutch while he was in school and put the buck in with the does. Father couldn't figure out why his does were always pregnant. If you ever ate Chicken al king at Schneiders Tavern in Westlake Ohio. You were eating rabbit.

Many years ago I knew a guy that raised rabbits to sell to some kind of blood bank for Hemopheliac's. (sp) Might wanna check it out.

Those are transgenic rabbits that have human genes put in their genetic sequence to produce Coagulation Factor VIIa. It stops hemophiliacs from bleeding to death. They are likely patented and very hard to obtain.

4 Fur, I for sure agree with each of your comments !!

I remember someone saying "Success leaves clues".

Just like if you take a look at most good high production long line trappers you will see uniformity in their tools, equipment, the way they do things, the way they are set up,the sets they use, down to how they make each set the same over n over and even how they bait and lure each set. They use the best they can afford and set them up all the same.Because uniformity and systems both cause speed - and of course time is money.

Now in the example of raising rabbits for meat. If a guy just wants to raise 3 or 4 does and a buck just for himself then that guy may not benefit or even care as much. But if a guy has 100 or 200 does and 12 to 25 bucks and trying to make money at it then that guys is going to be raising very specific meat rabbits ( NZ whites,Californians). All his cages, water system, and feeders will be exactly the same And he is going to know how much $ in feed and all other expenses it is costing him to produce each fryer size rabbit. It is really the difference in or between doing something as a hobby vs. as a business.

What really surprise’s me is that the small rabbits would have a higher meat to bone ratio, the rest makes sense.
