I know a little. In States where they have Running Hound enclosures it can be pretty big.

$75-100 a coyote according to a buddy that does it. Seeing how our fur might fetch you $10 for a put up coyote, that’s good money. He built pens to hold them and makes a run once a week when they’re buying.

… we had a pen and the buyer would come to us

.. 75 is what was paid … always tried to jew us down claiming there was a magical indian in Oklahoma that could live snare them with no damage or something like that lol

.. had a barrel with a fabricated door we’d stuff them in while running the line …. There was more than once we’d have to offload and go back to checking when the barrel got full

People take it seriously down here. The goal isn’t to catch the coyote, it’s just to trail them. Apparently there’s some serious money and bragging rights in it.

I attended an evening event at a fox pen once. Dogs had numbers painted on them. Judges were stationed throughout the pen, in elevated stands. When a fox came by, the judge spoke into a recorder, stating the time. Then, as the dogs passed on the track, the judge shone his flashlight on each dog and spoke their number in the order that they passed on the trail of the fox.

At midnight, all recorders were turned in. Wives played the recordings and assigned values to each dog's position in the chase. If a dog was observed to be daudling, it was recorded as well, and that dog could not earn any more points afterward.

The highest scoring dogs were the ones that would cut to the head of the chase rather than following the fox track. Such a dog would normally be in second position for the majority of the chases, and rarely in first.

There was beer, food, and friendly side bets. I believe the entry fee for a dog was $50 with no limit to the number of dogs an owner could enter.

I sold to a pen in SC. It was all about fox at the time and reds were going for $100.00 and grays at $25.00. Then they legalized the selling of coyotes and that ruined the live market in SC.
It was all about the chase.
The pen I sold to was 1500 acres in size. I just can't Imagin the cost of fencing that big a of an area. Must have big money in the chase.

Those of us out west that occasionally look for some running dog blood to cross into our hounds learned a long time ago to steer clear of the fox/coyote pen dogs if you want dogs that actually catch the game you are after. It is much like Charles describes and talking to guys who run in them, if you have a dog that makes a habit of catching the coyote/fox they will ban him from the pen. Those critters are expensive and they don't want them harmed.

so as a foxhound guy and a trapper i can tell you lots most owners dont want their game caught but in the same sense understands it happens and expect you to save the game if your able its usually the smaller pens that will ban hounds because it is easier for hounds to catch game if they get use to the pen thats when limiting hound numbers in the pen really come into effect here in Ontario anything over 200 acre can have coyotes and your only allowed one dog per acre on the smaller pens that hold fox as for the dogs the dogs that want to catch that coyote are usually the lead dogs as they have a desire to be their first if your ever looking for hounds you should buy from guys that run their dogs that actually hunt coyotes with their dogs generally a better grade dog as they need to follow the trail more before finding a fresh coyote as for the game if your selling smaller traps are key or softcatch because of less foot damage also dont trap in cold weather for guys in the north as frost bite usually will happen another most buyers prefer if they have been needled already

Coyote pens here in Wi. were fun , a great way to get dogs in shape during off season , a way to see different line or breeds run. The camaraderie and sharing knowledge and bloodlines was awesome. Early on before the state dnr ruined it with regulations we could self populate with coyotes we caught, always had a bunch to run. Now fencing has to be to code, coyotes have to be purchased from a licensed breeder or handler, so now you have to be very careful and we usually just run young dogs with a trainer. We had a couple pens locally, Had Sunday morning runs with coffee and breakfast in the club house. Owned by a very generous houndsman, We had years of good running, but between the dnr constantly harrasing him and age, we lost it. Now I am only aware of three in Wisconsin and they are all atleast a 3 hr drive.

When I trapped Mississippi I was approached several times by people that either had pens or were supplying animals for them. Never went down that road.

1) never met anyone that I would want in my camp
2) ethical treatment was suggestion
3) If a land owner wanted coyotes trapped it was $50 ea, while I was doing Beaver work. I wasn't down there to run a land line

I trapped in Mississippi on the coon eradication deal. And sold about 20 coyotes to a dealer. He came to where we were staying and dropped off the holding pens. He would come to get the coyotes and just leave the money on the kitchen table. $75.00 was the going rate.

When it was just reds and greys in the pens the pen owners would dig safety holes for the fox so they could escape the hounds. They didn't want those $100.00 reds to be caught.
When they legalized the buying of coyotes in SC coyotes they were brought in from several different states and the pen owners were only paying $25.00 per head. And the fox market was all but done.
I might have been the first trapper to catch a coyote in the Dillon SC area. The landowner hauled that coyote around showing it off for days. It was dead because at that time coyotes were illegal to be kept alive.

Some of the big events mean big money to the dog owners and even bigger money to the pen owners.

I sold some to the guy I uses to buy traps from. He sold them to a pen. He gave me $50 each said that's what they paid him. Later I elsewhere heard it was over 100 thay were paying. Wouldn't surprise me if he lied considering I later found out at some point he was the treasurer of the local fur takers and spent all their money. They didn't prosecute him not wanting hime to get a felony and not be able to take his young daughter hunting.

He ended up having to sell everything he owned to pay them back. At least from the hear say I picked up years after the fact.
