If you carried a M14 in USMC, then a pre64 Model 70 is a piece of cake !

I've been hunting with a pre-64 M70 for twenty-five years. I don't think it's very heavy but maybe I'm used to it.

My dad hunted with it for almost forty years, never heard him complain about the weight.

Dad had it ported sometime in the 90's. I don't know how much that helped with recoil or muzzle rise but it made it even louder. It will knock the dust off the rafters at the range and get me dirty looks from the other shooters. LOL.

Eh...wot?

I'm not sure why weight is a big deal deal either. A pound or two helps felt recoil. A nice comfortable sling for walking. Most guys just sit in a stand. If your backpacking in someplace you just take a couple more 5 minute rest breaks. Same when climbing a mountain. Your hopefully at least going to be packing out meat and a head. Good physical condition should be very important. Rifle weight is just a nonissue to me. Marketing scheme IMO. When your heading someplace remote you want a rifle that wont break if you fall or drop it. Myself, I like iron sights as well as a scope. I have yet to see a front sight block scope picture. Bang the scope you can just remove it if needed. If you need a second shot reliable smooth action is what I want also. If I can put the bullet where it needs to go, if failure of a part is unlikely, if I can quickly load another round, that's a rifle I will consider.

I agree with ya Danny. I just spent an extra $100 to get a tikka superlite instead of a lite. The difference in person was a couple shallow barrel flutes, I don't think it makes a real difference, they got me with marketing

I have a new model 70 super grade in .264 win mag. It has the french walnut stock on it and it doesn't seem to be very heavy. It shoots pretty good with reloader 22 and Barnes TTSX bullets. It seems like a very well made rifle

I have a Pre 64 model 70- 06 and it wasn't so heavy when I was 60 but it's gained a lot of weight since I turned 80. LOL

YES. Just to help YOU out I will trade you for some nice, lightweight Ruger Americans. Not the cheap ones either, the ones that have really nice plastic on them. smile

I have nothing clever to put here.

My wife shoots a 300WM. Shes not much over five foot. I bought a howa barreled action. Had a gunsmith measure her and make a stock that fits her. For whitetails I load 150 grain bullets at about 2900FPS but she can she can shoot a heavy load 8-10 times without much discomfort cause it fits her.
