Rabbit poo can go directly on the garden. It is not hot like chicken and won't burn your plants.

Here's some photos of how I use free to $10.00 totes, cut up and free to $5.00 barrels to compost and garden in.

Seedling trees in small pots, in milk crates, that we sell. They are placed tight together for insulation. The composting manure throws some heat, so there is less chance of the roots suffering damage from freezing. There's elderberry and Catawba grape plants in the mineral tubs, farthest out. The closest are strawberries.

The finished soil, which started out as what's in the other totes. I grew over it in 2025 by putting about 8" to 10" of soil on top.


Black walnuts about ready to be covered. As they sprout, many will be put in deep tree pots. Some will be sold as saplings. Many will have named varieties of black walnut, heartnut, butternut, English walnut and buart nut grafted onto them, when they are large enough.


The manure typically reduces by about 2/3rds in volume. I'll continue to top it with more rabbit manure, as it breaks down until late January. I'll top it with soil in the Spring and plant on top of it. I'll mine out and use the finished soil after frost, next Fall

Shoot thanks for being this up I don't see it ! That's pretty great ! Where are you getting your tires for only $10 though ?

I get the totes off of Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace. Just the bladders are usually free and with the cage they are $10.00. Lots of people do ask more, but there are so many free to cheap totes, I"ve never spent more than $10.00. The same goes for the barrels.

Many people who sell firewood use the cages, but don't use the bladders. I've seen people giving away over 100 bladders at once, to anyone who will hall them off. They usually have Material Safety Data sheets on them, that tell you what was in them, so you can tell if toxicity will be and issue.

Mulch places give away large amounts of totes that held mulch die. Those totes are usually stained.

The bladders make good small greenhouse just cut and put over plants. You do have to vent them in hot weather. I cooked some plants in one when it first got hot. You could also cut them into flat pieces and build a large greenhouse with them by attaching them to a frame made of cattle panels. They will last much longer than plastic sheeting.

A big advantage of growing in soil over composting manure is that the heat from the manure warms the soil producing faster root and plant growth in the Spring.
