I will try to explain why I personally try to keep it low key.
We only have 4 veterans at a time as this gives us the ability to have quality one on one instruction. Also, some of these veterans have been in some serious combat, and speaking as a multi-war combat veteran myself, they do better in small groups. We could turn this into a three ring circus with news coverage and tons of visitors, but that would not only defeat the real purpose of this event, but would not be fair to the vets.
Yes, they come to learn trapping, but the main focus is getting them into the outdoors and to be around other combat veterans in a non-stress environment. Its their time to bond on the trapline and to work as a team. At night after the work is done and chow is over, they sit around, just like the old days in the barracks. There is laughing, sometimes crying, and getting the demons out. I have walked by in the middle of the night and I can hear them talking away. Normally by day two they have TD and myself rolling.
I attended the first event as one of the veterans. It got me focused again and changed my life for the better. TD and his wife are the best people I know. They open their not only their house but their hearts to each group that attends. I have never felt more comfortable around people more then when I'm around TD and his wife.

UPDATE....The four combat veterans selected this year are all outdoorsmen and have a keen interest in trapping. One traps a little already on family hunting property, one owns crawfish ponds and has problems with critters, one helps manage a ranch and the other is an avid woodsman from mountains. So they are from Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and West Virginia. Yes, we have a veteran driving all the way from West Virginia to attend. I'm excited as these men are coming to learn everything they can so they can go forth and do amazing things. The word has gotten out that if you are willing to listen and get your hands dirty, you will come away with not only the knowledge but great gear to put what you learn to use.
Let me put the impact this has in prospective...There have been a couple of veterans that have had a life changing experience attending. They are getting outdoors, using their brain and hands, and are feeling they have a propose again. It might not seem like it but WE, everyone involved no matter how small, is not only changing lives, but saving them.
TD and I cannot do what we do without the generous support that we receive from Trapperman. We can't thank you enough.
