Since you're going for a mild odor, make sure you’re not using straight pure quill. To tone it down, a common starting dilution is 1 ounce of pure quill to 15 ounces of peanut oil, which creates a much more manageable skunk essence. From that diluted mix, start with about 1 ounce per gallon of bait. This should give you a light skunky note without overpowering the bait. You can always add more, but you can’t take it out once it’s in.

If you find the 1:15 dilution isn’t giving you as much skunk odor as you want, you can strengthen it by adjusting the ratio to 1:10, 1:5, etc. until you reach your desired smell. If you end up using most of your tinctured skunk volume to get there, that’s a good sign to increase the quill-to-oil ratio in your next batch rather than adding excessive amounts to the bait.

Mix thoroughly and let it sit for a day or two before using so the scent evens out. Keep good notes on how much you add, especially in relation to the protein you’re using, since different bases carry skunk differently.
