In 1908, photographer and author Thomas R. Dawley visited the Metcalf family near Brevard in Transylvania County, North Carolina, during his two-year journey through the Appalachian Mountains. Though he found their small eyes distinctive—a trait locals said made Metcalfs easy to recognize—he noted nothing unusual about the family and described them respectfully.

They remind me of possums. I think an Episode of Tiny Toons did a parody of Deliverance and one of the characters was a possum..

There is some unfortunate genetics going on there. I am guessing the family tree looks similar to a telephone pole.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Gotta keep that bloodline pure. Can't go diluting it with foreign blood. Ha!

The hellacious teasing/harassment they received probably didn't give them much to smile about.

Ran into some clan folks that looked similar to those folks in Arkansas years back. The locals called them "narrow eyed" folks. I only saw them a couple times while I trapped there. Their facial structure was very long compared to those of us that bred children far away from the immediate family tree.

I followed one down a winding country Creekside road one year. He was towing a bass boat with a Harley Davidson motorcycle. You could not pass on that section of road as it was very narrow and curvy.

I never could see any vehicle from following him from behind what was towing that boat. I was a bit perplexed for a while until the guy pulled off at an old country store for some fuel. Should have taken a picture, but I was too lost in the moment I suspect in disbelief.

I went on to ask the local Game Fish Warden about these folks and he just chuckled and gave me a few details.

I bet that fellas mom, dad, kids, aunts, brothers, sisters, uncles and neighbors all bore a similar resemblance. smile

Its likely BPEI syndrome...if one parent has it, high heredity rates for the kids.

Deliverance is mentioned. Makes me wonder if the producers looked intentionally toward these folks and how would they have known about them? Seems it could make an interesting back story.
