My son ask me the other day. Do you still have any of the stuff you used on you cowboy boots? Like what? Oh polish or something that can be put on to keep mine from cracking. Been get wet then dry lot lately.
Okay I go in my stash and of course I have one last bottle of Outers Neatfoot Oil.
If you lived here where I grew up. Had anything to do with being out doors. You knew or used Outers Products. My older Brothers first job out of high school was at Outers. Ran a lathe of some type cut thread on gun cleaning rods.
So with him working there our house had a broad array of Outers Products.
Also any DU banquet or sportsman club raffles always had something from Outers.
Anyway all these years later I give my last bottle of Outers Neats Foot oil to my son. It was actually two part bottle I dumped into make one. But is my last. I've actually been using my skunk oil. Thats another story.
Not sure what I still have left of true useables after all these years. I know I have quite a few wooden arrows. A bunch different size gun cleaning rods even one for my 5mm air gun.
Anyone else still got Old School Outer stash. I used to have some item like this oil in cases and gun cleaning solvent too.

Yep, that name is familiar. I might have an old (for me that's from the 80s or early 90s) bottle of oil or cleaning solvent from them.

I don't have any old outers stuff.

Coon fat when rendered makes a nice oil. Nice and thin at room temperature. I render it on the stove. Very low heat.

I have a small bottle of my best sun rendered skunk oil in my muzzle loader box. Used it to lube patches for round balls. I have a jar bit lower grade in garage. I have never rendered coon fat. Did sun render a jar of bear oil years ago. Actually don't recall what I did with that. I have no idea what they rendered to get NeatsFoot Oil? Can't say I ever seen a Neat? Let alone ones feet?
Guess I will have to Google that.
My best guess would be mink oil. I know that was a thing for a time.

That was quicker to do than I thought to do.

This makes sense then for the Outers Oil. There was a rendering works just up the road a bit from main Outer plant.
Maybe old man Verndale owned that too??
Moosetrot might know? I know the rendering plant burned summer of 1975. I was just out of high school and applied there for truck driver job. I went to work for pole barn crew. The render plant burned down few weeks later. Is only reason I remember that.

Not sure if Vern Dale owned the rendering works. Great place to catfish though. There was a sluice that ran whatever they hosed out of the floor straight into the Black River. Talk about chumming! If a fella got bored with the fishing he could bring the .22 along and shoot rats in the nearby dump. Later turned into a super fund site probably due to Outers' waste.

Neatsfoot oil is rendered from cow shin bones. I use a good bit of it, vegetable tanned leather gets a heavy coat before dying. Some projects just get the oil, it will darken the leather.

The name that comes to mind for the render works was Blie? Blye? Not sure of spelling. I'm sure there was stuff from Outers in that old dump. Believe most the super fund stuff was from Metalics. Did Vern Dale own that too?
