I prefer coilsprings for land trapping; because in my area, it's tough enough to dig a smaller trap bed.

longsprings equal more excavation to bed the trap.

I used both. no issues here with frozen ground. longsprings were my go to in trail sets and walk through sets.

okay, I know how y'all said that but why. is there a difference in performance or just preference.

If I didn't have to excavate around a bazillion rocks to bed a trap (i.e. I was trapping in sand); I'd probably go longspring, because they tend to bed more stable.

either one will catch/hold.

Coils here too. My soil is hard bentonite clay and once it freezes it is a real bugger to chop a trap bed.

yes.

but don't discount the bedding (depending on your soil conditions)...you'll deal with your choice every time you set a trap.

I'd buy 110's, # 11 longsprings and some 1.5 coilsprings.

i prefer coils for everything except muskrats but probably because they dont make a stoploss in a coil and i do love long springs for the oldtime factor but i think coils are a little faster and more adjustable than long springs

I run coils as my hands won’t let me set long springs easily, and I can set 330’s by hand, it’s the way my thumb has to work to compress the long spring.

I started with long spring traps. I caught a lot of my first critters with #2 double long springs. It was a lot of digging to bed one though. Now it's coil springs. I do use big long springs for beaver in the water every so often now.
