The domestic variety for some reason produces a lot more berries than the wild type. I like them, even though they smell sort of like wet socks that you've worn for a couple of days.

The berries hold on for a long time around here, kind of like crabapples do. I think after they get seasoned, the birds like them more

to get the seeds to sprout you have to skuff them with some course sandpaper , going through a grouse gizzard does the same.
freezing does change the sugar concentration so less smell

When the berries freeze on the bush, or you freeze them at home the starch is converted to sugar changing the flavor and smell.

They make great jelly for biscuits cooked over the fire in cast iron.

Mole is spot on. I had them surrounding my previous northern Minnesota lake home and watched ruffed And spruce grouse at them as long as the berrys lasted in the winter.

My current northern home I planted them out in the acreage and again the grouse flock to them.
