Was wondering what it looks like and how they operate in such large capacity. Found this
Enjoyable to watch although the narrator needs a little gusto!

My mom worked in a large tannery in Fleetwood PA until she retired. The operation started in 1909 as a builder of custom car bodies. The business was successful and eventually built car bodies for Duesenberg, Hispano-Suiza, Isotta-Fraschini, Lancia, Lincoln, Locomobile, Mercedes-Benz, Pierce-Arrow, Rolls-Royce and others. At one point they employed around 700 workers.

Eventually the buildings were bought by Garden State Tannery and they continued production of leather for high end automobile interiors.

I remember they imported excelsior from Brazil for car seat stuffing. It came in on rail cars and nutria came with it. They did not survive our winters.

The tannery closed in 2003 and the entire complex burnt down Christmas Eve 2005. It was a huge fire with over forty fire companies responding.

They said it was started by and air conditioner set to heat to keep water pipes from freezing.

Eh...wot?

I got a tour of the Sleepy Creek Tannery here in Iowa years ago. Here's a couple short videos I took.

Titiana,

I wish the US had a country full of intelligent people like yourself, instead of the mentally weak folks we see running all around and in our Congress.

Thanks for ALL of the answers and info you have supplied over the years.

Female squealing! That's funny.
In the 1990s Bering Air in Nome had regular flights to Provedenya. 3 or 4 Nome men got Russian wives from there!
