Need the good and bad on Trex or or similar composite decking vs wood. I know the cost is a factor. Does the cost outweigh the constant care that wood requires?
How does it holdup in the south's extreme heat and humidity. Does it get extremely hot during the summer?
Dont have a problem doing a spring power wash to maintain.
Need the pro's and con's.

Thanks, Sarge

It is all about the same .
Use concealed fasteners and the decking that corresponds

make sure your stringers are no more than 16" apart...trex will bow more than wood... likes to pop nails as well.

Darker colors get extremely hot in the sun.

Neighbor bought a bunch of trex decking from an Amish guy and thought they got the deal of the century a few years ago. After the first year it all faded from the nice new looking decking to a faded milky color. Junk according to him and his son in law, who both bought enough for both of their large decks.

Maybe some other materials are better however his good deal was not so good. I guess they both know why they bought it so cheaply now.

The newer stuff is made so it doesn’t fade as fast. It grows and shrinks a bit with cold and heat. Its gets hot under foot in the summer. 16” o.c. definitely lime someone said. It can look real sharp. I. went with cedar and suggest it in builds I do. Its so much more pleasurable under foot in the summer when you really use it.

Gets real hot, don't use it on a dock deck that folks migh want to lay on or be barefoot on. I'd suggest cedar, just be sure to leave a fairly wide gap between deck boards and use treated joists.

Looks like wood it is. After the post and doing more research. The cost isnt a factor. How hot it would get in the S.C. sun. We like sit on the porch barefoot and our dogs. So, the replacement a few pieces at time will commence soon.
Thanks for all the input.

Gets very , very hot. I used the original stringers and you could get seasick walking across parts of my deck. Going back to wood in the future.

Some products used to need 12 inch by 12 inch stringers underneath or it voided the warranty, what I’ve been around always had a roof over it and was grey so I can’t say if it faded or how hot it got.

Low maintenance, no more staining every other year. Yes, it gets hot on bare feet. A bit pricey. We're happy so far, been about 3 yrs since we ripped out the 35 yr old PT planks.

No one mentioned the static charge that stuff can give you if you wear the wrong kind of shoes
Makes opening the door a guessing game, if you will get zapped when you touch the knob

Wood is better if do maintenance like you are supposed to
