Caught a female coyote yesterday,,, but her underfur was so matted I couldn’t comb it out.
I used my steel fur comb and I was literally destroying the pelt… I gave up and she’s going into the bait station/carcass dump today.

Anyone else have a better idea of how to get that matted stuff out without destroying it??

This may take a while but have you tried a flea comb? Smaller teeth sometimes can get though it without pulling it out. You need one with steel teeth

Maybe try " mane and tail" detangler , in the tack aisle .... but with that amount of matting of the under fur probably not much you can do....when a dog gets that bad it's usually shaved.

I caught one with matted underfur but the guard hair was perfect. I made it as pretty as possible. I sent it to fur harvesters and got a good price. Apparently they give them a shake and toss into a pile without feeling the fur.

Ive had two in my life that had dreadlocks like that. Gave up on both of them. Sprayed one with tangled free stuff for human hair. Still couldn't get it out. Both got tossed, and like you I hate wasting fur

I have had a few raccoons that were that way. Thought they were all just burred up when I checked my line in the dark, but after trying to comb them out, just tossed them.

Like you, hate to do it, but you can't polish some turds.

Soaking the affected area with some baby oil type material and work it in with your fingers then slowly begin to pick/comb out the matted areas. I have used an ice pick to help straighten out the matted areas first before attempting to comb it.

This, but I use mineral oil
But even if the fur is unsaveable there's still money to be made
Claws, skull, balcum and glands. Sometimes we need to look past the fur value
