A great friend to many on this site and a mainstay at conventions for years . He truly loved trapping and helping others learn about it. He was a good friend and I’m really happy I got to know him and run trap lines with him. He can trap the sloughs of South Dakota now even as a nonresident. Godspeed Jim.

Sorry to hear of his passing, may he rest in peace. Thanks for letting us know blackhammer.
I got myself a seniors' GPS. Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination, it tells me why I wanted to go there.

That is sad news. I was just reminiscing about our visits at our Trapperman Breakfast here.
So sorry to hear this. Rest in peace, Jim.

Many didn't know this about Jim. Besides on being a very good trapper that put up some impressive numbers, he was an accomplished rock and mountain climber.

Jim had the largest single season coon catch I know of in Minnesota and it was when coon were worth good money. He was the one the first to use chain drowners . He invented his pocket poppers for mink trapping and marketed at conventions. But most importantly to Jim was helping other trappers especially young trappers starting out . He was a talented cabinet maker and carpenter as well.

RIP Does anyone have a picture of Jim. I might have met him but not personally. Lee, you were both at the 2013 Trapperman Breakfast at the Farm Kitchen here in Sauk County, but I can't find a photo of him. Maybe someone else will come up with one!

Don’t have one. After a bunch of conventions and trapping trips we traveled together I wish I did.

I am in the same boat as Lee. I am sure I have seen him at conventions but can't put a face to the name. In any event, thoughts for his family and may he rest in peace.

I found this image on a MN rock climbing site. It's not the best.
I know Jim scales Devils Tower several times plus many other routes inwest. I'm sure he told me once he climbed the highest peak in the lower 48.
I have only been able to find a death notice for Jim , no obituary

Good find Steve. Jim didn’t spend a lot of time sitting on the couch until he got sick.

Little memory about Jim, I don't remember the year, I'd say 2009. Up until that point I hadn't ever caught 1000 muskrats in the winter. It was mid-February and I was sitting at about 915 rats for the ice season and had basically run out of good spots up here. Jim said come on down and trap the lake he was on. Needless to say I made my goal with room to spare. Not many people would do that!
Rest in peace buddy.

Jim got me started ice trapping muskrats invited me out to the lakes he was on. Rats were worth good money then . Kind had forgotten how nice it was of him to do that Remember at a convention in Lima,Ohio at the camping area some kid was riding in the back of a pickup and probably had been over served and he fell out and his head hit the ground hard. Jim was the first one to run to the kid and prop him up until an ambulance came. That was Jim.
