I prefer the feist. Many good ones down south.

If I was getting another cur - it would be of the Kemmer or Stephens line.

BuckSHot was Kemmer line. Serious prey drive. Not the most sociable dog in the world.

My mutt is nuts about squirrels she works the tree well not sure what she would do if I dropped one out of the tree. Some dogs are a natural or my dogs just nuts I’m not sure.

With catahoulas, like other multi task cur breeds, you really need to be looking for a specific line or type of catahoula for your specific needs. I don't care what the breed standards say, I've yet to find one dog that excels in every task imaginable. Catahoulas are bred for stock, catch, bay, tree among other abilities. I'd look long and hard for a breeder that breeds for tree dogs.

The BMC is the same in having hunting/treeing lines and stock/catch lines.

JMO, but for a pure squirrel dog nothing beats a feist. If squirrel and coon then I might go cur.

I'm going to say this and take it however you would like. There are some dogs where you can do everything the books tell you in the way of training, but if the dog does not have that drive in them to hunt or tree then it won't. That's just something I learned from Raymond Plummer who has his own bloodline of Catahoulas. Not saying it can't be done, but like stated above it helps to have a good bloodline to go off of.

I have had Cats and Mt Curs. I found mt curs to be a more natural tree dog than catahoulas. The catahoulas were more prone to wanting to run game like deer and hogs. Of course, mt curs will too, when they are first starting out - but they are much easier to break. Mt cur the best all around dog I every had from hunter to house pet - out of everything from dachshunds to labs.

Dogs are individuals. You can get a l up out of the best (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) and stud money can buy that will wash out and be a boot licker. You can also get an unknown breed pound pup that turns out to be great.

You increase your odds of geting what you want going with known breeder with proven known lines that do what you are looking for.

I made several crosses on English setters years ago I thought would blow the NSTRA away. I came out with good talented dogs but non were better most not as great as their parents like I was shooting for.

My best begal would tree squirrels after I shot a few out over her. She ran rabbits nice and slow tell you killed them or they went in a hole. Best rabbit/squirrel dog have or will ever have. Nothing like your first dog when your kid.

Cats are okay at everything but you have to find a good one because they a muts and bread with so many breeds. I have a stock dog that's 2 I have been training him myself he's a short haired border Collie. I have seen them for hunting dogs bay dogs food cows and pigs and pet but they aren't the same by any means.

Loving every day as it comes.
