Feist for me.
Size and handling was my desire.
Pleasing me was their desire.
Rest was training to hunt my style.
I like a dog that wants to please.

do you think a cat could do the same just as good or no?

In general, no. My Cats did not take to treeing nearly as readily as my mt curs did. I think there are a whole lot more mt cur breeders who specialize in tree dogs than catahoula breeders. I know of more cat stock dogs than tree dogs. I think tree stock fiests take easily to treeing, also - but I also use my cur dogs on coons and most fiests are a little too small to jump on a wounded coon. They will dang sure try, though

If i remember correctly the leopard cur had some catahoula blood in them along with hound and something else.I had one years ago that was kinda long haired. John Wick got into breeding them and they started getting shorter tighter haired dogs and hunted like a hound. His big stud dog at that time was Wicks camo jug

I don't think you understand that catahoula is a mut they have so many different breeds in them they can be 60 pounds or 120 pounds.

Loving every day as it comes.

I have always understood that they ARE a mix but certain types of dogs are bred into them.

They are technically mutts but just like any cur they are a mutt. They are specifically bred with certain dogs though that had the capabilities to tree and track animals. So the catahoula cur is a certain type of dog that was first bred in Louisiana that comes from a cur not a mutt.

I would not get a catahoula if I wanted a tree dog. Most I have been around are more of a hog dog, stock dog, and guard dog - never seen one tree well.

You need to figure out what you want, do the work and tell your mom what you want. I have no desire for a catahoula as I don't hunt hogs and much prefer smaller dogs that are alert and more aware. I would rather have a collie than a catahoula for treeing squirrels - I am serious.

Ok thanks.....it's so weird because I have you telling me not to get one then I have other people saying that they are great squirrel dogs.

I never had one so no opinion but I don't see anyone on here saying they're great squirrel dogs. In fact most everyone has said they're better hog dogs. We have a mountain cur. She is as squirrely as they come....

I'm sure there are lines of catahoulas out there that'll tree, but it wouldn't be my first pick to look for one. Mainly because my experience with the few I've known is their tendency to be one person/family dogs to extremes of either skittishnes/fear around strangers or hostility. Admittedly my experience is limited to just a few and I highly prize one person/family in a dog I don't care for skittishness or aggression at all. Standoffish alertness not being easily caught up by a stranger is about perfect middle ground.

Nobody is saying don’t get the dog. What they’re doing is trying to give you sound advice on a breed they have had experience with and you don’t like what you’re being told. Listen or don’t listen, but don’t argue when people are trying to help.

That describes how my cur was. He was devoted to me, my wife and my parents. In that order. At home, he treated outsiders as invaders. Away from home he had a longer fuse, but not much

And we socialized the heck out of him as a puppy. He just flipped at about 5 months old.
