Look up how to make a hay set. Make them using some hay from the chicken house with manure and feathers in it if you can.

If you can find a trail where they are coming and going, set two footholds in that trail. Hang a few fresh chicken feathers between the two traps

Check local laws about exposed bait first

Good advice on some level . . .to add to that, I would say :

Setting a baited set too close to live prey, may be ignored, as the predator becomes focused on it's 'target'.
Finding out the ENTRY / EXIT point is where I would try to focus.
If you can use feathers, use them. Plucking e dead bird, if you have it, works.
So does the insides of an old feather pillow. I have used it a lot to my advantage.
If you can not use it AT THE SET . . . how close can you use It ?
A 2 ft. circle of feathers near a dirt hole set will draw a lot of attention.

My first question . . . and important to this whole story line, should be
: How are the chicken housed or kept at night ?
