Ok this always ends up being a good debate. I like to have options. I have areas I can’t use drags or I can’t use earth anchors or I have to tether off with cable to a tree or something so I like to have a quick link on all my traps so I can have options at each set.

So what attachment methods do you use? Quick link, split rings, j-hook ( just open and close with pliers) . Post up what your tried and true method of attaching anchoring systems on the fly is !

I dont usually cable off to trees at all, either a super stake or a drag. So my traps all have 18" chained super stakes with every s/j hook welded, then all my drags have 8' of #3 chain with a quick link. If I want to use a drag I just hook the quick link on the end of the trap chain right at the super stake and viola, done

I have zero faith in a used J hook for coyotes. I do have a bunch of them in a jar that I may use at some point for coons or if I weld them.

I have 3/16 quick links on most of mine and have only had 1 failure.
That was me putting way more force with a stake puller than a coyote could
Also when I learned to pull on the anchor side of the quick link

I have not used a drag in a long time but I have some.
They all have double loop / swingset chain that will be replaced before I do use them.

Lost 1 trap because of that type chain

Only thing I cable directly to trees is DPs and I just loop cable through eye on one end and use a small quick link

I tighten all quick links with a small adjustable wrench and a pair of pliers

Quick links.

Never had one fail on an animal.

I can stretch them out enough horsing on them with my big puller where you can’t screw them open anymore.

Split rings ......... changing anything is fast. Never lost a bobcat or coyote due to one failing. If I was trapping wolves or lions I would probably weld everything shut.

3/16 quick link on all of my land traps. I cable off on tree's and clogs in the woods, to many rocks for earth anchor.
Water trap's get 1/8" quick link.
I had two 10' chains I left in the woods attached to trees that had been there for 5 years, I turned the nut on the quick link to loosen it and I was able to turn it the rest of the way with my fingers

I have a similar setup on my wolf traps, 36-42" of chain from trap to super stake, with three swivels. Drags have 8'-10' of chain. #5 chain on my traps, mostly #5 but some miscellaneous chains (all as heavy or heavier than #5) on my drags. All swivels welded and S hooks or cold shuts attaching the earth anchor welded. I use a 1/4" quick link to attach drags, or a length of chain to chain solid to tree. Often I just loop a drag around a tree and hook it solid, but I usually have a couple spare lengths of chain along and I sometimes use them to chain solid to a tree. My coyote traps are a little more varied, they all have earth anchors attached also, and all swivels welded (we have wolves, I don't want one opening up a J hook) but the chain may be #3, or #5, or some from cut down tire chains. And some of those traps are short chained with as little as 6" between trap and the swivel attaching the chained earth anchor, (22-24" from trap to super stake) and some may have as much as four feet between trap and swivel attaching the earth anchor chain. A 1/4" quick link will not fit through #3 chain, a 3/16" will but if I am anywhere there is any possibllity of a wolf showing up, I will use two 3/16" quick links.

I should say, I have I think 10 MB 750s and one Sleepy Creek 4 1/2 that were my first wolf traps (used to have two 4 1/2s and a dozen 750s, set up like this, but three of those traps have been stolen) with 8' of chain attached and a chained earth anchor Ying of at about the 30" mark. After I used them a year I realized that chain attached to the trap was unnecesssary, and if staking the trap was a pain to deal with.
