I dont usually cable off to trees at all, either a super stake or a drag. So my traps all have 18" chained super stakes with every s/j hook welded, then all my drags have 8' of #3 chain with a quick link. If I want to use a drag I just hook the quick link on the end of the trap chain right at the super stake and viola, done
I have a similar setup on my wolf traps, 36-42" of chain from trap to super stake, with three swivels. Drags have 8'-10' of chain. #5 chain on my traps, mostly #5 but some miscellaneous chains (all as heavy or heavier than #5) on my drags. All swivels welded and S hooks or cold shuts attaching the earth anchor welded. I use a 1/4" quick link to attach drags, or a length of chain to chain solid to tree. Often I just loop a drag around a tree and hook it solid, but I usually have a couple spare lengths of chain along and I sometimes use them to chain solid to a tree. My coyote traps are a little more varied, they all have earth anchors attached also, and all swivels welded (we have wolves, I don't want one opening up a J hook) but the chain may be #3, or #5, or some from cut down tire chains. And some of those traps are short chained with as little as 6" between trap and the swivel attaching the chained earth anchor, (22-24" from trap to super stake) and some may have as much as four feet between trap and swivel attaching the earth anchor chain. A 1/4" quick link will not fit through #3 chain, a 3/16" will but if I am anywhere there is any possibllity of a wolf showing up, I will use two 3/16" quick links.
