They do a lot of dogging on coyotes in my area constantly harassing the coyotes. I myself notice it’s a heck of a lot harder to trap them where they are dogging them everyday compared to if I set an area where they don’t dig them . They don’t kill hardly any I by 5 in a month and a half . What do you guys think and I’m by no means against dogging kill them all

I have a couple of families that run coursing dogs that live about 5 miles away. They have been going pretty hard this season and I haven't trapped a coyote or even heard them in the evenings. Haven't found but just a few spots where they dig for holes in the bean stubble and hardly any tracks this season. I was wondering to myself last night if those guys running more often than normal have the coyotes pushed away from where I normally catch them. Rest assured they will make their way back around when we start kidding in mid March !

Chasing, calling, night hunting, it all negatively affects their behavior in a big way.

Especially this night time bologna.

My take is with constant harassment when a coyote is circling the set and say a dog somewhere starts barking they may just high tail it out

I don’t see that much difficulty in trapping in high dog or shooting areas. What I think people experience is either a reduced number of coyotes or traps not being g set in good locations.

I see the biggest problem is people set traps and expect coyotes will magically appear and find those traps. Location is everything and sometimes it’s a matter of moving 50 yards.

IMO sometimes 1-2 yards. There is no doubt that when there are fewer coyotes you wont catch as many. The night hunting thing is getting pretty popular. With the cost of a decent thermal I am surprised how many are doing it.

i hunt coyotes with hounds and call them also never seen it affect my trapping production from what i see in the snow they still hunt the same and work a field the same way they do in the summer the only difference i find is they don't respond to calls very well in areas i run my hounds lots of dog runners rely on bait piles and some bait piles are huge which definitely could effect them working a dirthole

X2

No doubt that as the population declines (especially the youngsters) while the pressure and education is constantly going up that catching more requires more work, good locations, switching sets etc. I dont know when the proverbial switch is thrown from just fewer and somewhat cautious coyotes to outright paranoid ones but there is no doubt a point here when that happens. If you trap here long enough you'll see the pattern of how the pressure/caution factor plays out year to year and how you can initially respond. But once that paranoid stage hits, shuffling steel a few yards or switching up setups tends to be detrimental vs helpful

When I start seeing trucks with dump boxes cruising around, I focus on some public ground that is around. Those are usually broken up into small tracts so the fast dog folks don’t hunt there.

I’m talking about calling in those areas. The trapping regulations are too restrictive.

I did about 45-50 miles of gravel travel yesterday afternoon. Only found 1 pile of coyote scat on the roads I traveled. You dang right I stopped to pick it up ! Lol. Didn't see near to mounds that I normally see in the bean stubble from them digging for mice and voles. I'm glad the coyote houndsmen are knocking em out. I would far rather be out after Bobcats.

Does one affect the other? Only in the numbers of coyote's left. My motto is if I can’t catch’em, I’ll call’em. If I can’t call’em, I’ll catch’em. Seems to work for me. I prefer to call what I can then catch the rest.
