I toyed with idea of getting out early and getting in a half day tomorrow before it starts changing over. But the last few times I tried that I learned why Atlanta becomes the world's largest skating rink when snow or ice is around. I've gotten in that last minute trap check before just have to slip and slide my way home before. Not again.

I can't begin to fathom how much fun Atlanta traffic would be on a sheet of ice!

I was "lucky" enough to fly into ATL the morning of that snowmageddon about 10ish years ago. For work. Spent two days in a hotel room. What a disaster that was.

I know they joke a lot about the people in the south when they get winter weather.. but it’s usually more ice than snow.. and literally very little equipment or infrastructure to deal with it.
Hope all you guys in the south that ain’t used to this stays safe.
This is the kind of winter that I remember from the 70s.
Ain’t hearing too much squabbling now about the global warming thing.

Checked cat sets physically yesterday and adjusted one camera that was bumped somehow so they are all on my sets and working changed battery packs in 2 that have been out for several weeks. So I can see everything from home during the cold spell that’s here now. Tankless water heater parts arriving today so that’s my afternoon flushing and rebuilding that beast.

Running the wood boiler and the furnace at the same time in this subzero weather. I ran the Pex lines along the plumbing side of the house to keep any of the plumbing from freezing up under these conditions. The boiler gives off heat even when the furnace fans not blowing so it’s not running every few minutes.

Yep, in my area of Kentucky they are calling for 10-14 inches of snow and some sleet. It will shut us down for sure.

The south is just not set up to handle cold and ice well. Up here it is pretty much just another day as we are conditioned to it "more or less", currently -18 degrees and my teenage daughter just left for her 30 minute drive to work. She left 15 minutes early in her 4x4 truck with snow tires, weight in the back, and spare warm clothes. After December, the roads are never not ice covered except for the highways.
I was "south" last year for a cold/stormy snap and they had 13 degree temps, a day of thick ice followed by 11 inches of snow. Kinda figured it was going to be a long day but we just kicked in the 4x4 and worked our way through the line. Counted 84 vehicles in the ditch and the locals didn't understand that if their pipes run in the wall or attic that they would have to leave both the hot and cold water trickle at all spouts. It was a few days of chaos and panic for them with all sorts of "tricks" to thaw pipes and get from point A to Point B.
Best would be to hunker down and give your self plenty of time if you have to be somewhere. Just because the speed limit say 70 MPH doesn't mean you have to try to attain it when the road is ice and snow covered. Without a team of plow trucks clearing roads and spreading salt/sand they are at the mercy of the next warm spell before things get back to normal.

First year using them they have all been working so far some are more sensitive than others that might be by design. LOL I even swapped a sensitive cam for a normal one incase it was an environmental issues it was not just a quick on the trigger camera is all. That can be adjusted by increasing the trigger gaps plus I can request a photo on the app at the next sync up if I have any concerns about a camera not working. When I’m physically there I trigger every camera to verify they are working.

The app has a gallery I can review that shows day/week/month of photos taken and sent to the gallery. I can look at say today’s photos to see what’s being sent by what cameras. The app is amazing as far as what can be done with it from home to view and adjust the cameras it’s all laid out in the program.

Have not seen the expected battery drain I’d of expected with the time they have been out and the cold spells showed no major drain on them the next few days will be a real extreme test on them. I did get some photos today already I’ll see if they all check in by the end of the day.

You are exactly right. I grew up in mid Michigan (Bay City area) and cold, big snow, BIG drifts were the norm. Seems like it took an act of Congress to miss school. When the military brought me to Kentucky (Ft. Knox) I figured out real quick that that snow shuts things down. I will say this though, I've lived here since 1992 for the most part, and the roads here are NOT the roads in Michigan. We have maybe one fairly straight road in the county, the rest are winding and somewhat hilly depending on what part of the county you are in. There are roads here that plow trucks simply cannot get to due to steepness alone. I always wondered why school got shut down with an 1' of snow. Come drive some of these roads and you will quickly see why! Just think about school buses trying to navigate these roads in subpar conditions with a load of kids.....

You forgot to also mention the whole 3" of shoulder those roads have!!!! Not only dont they have the equipment to move the snow but theyve got no place to push it

I trapped in the winter months in Arkansas back in the early 2000's and experienced a few ice storms. Never saw such a thing before living in Pa.

Power lines with a foot of ice hanging on them and the white pine and cedar trees were so heavy they just were pulled over from the weight of the accumulated ice.

I couldn't drive back any mountain roads to check my cat traps due to all the trees that were hung over the already narrow dirt road that I had to use daily. It was a mess.

Yeah, Bob, ice is the worst. Snow bad but ice pulls things down and breaks stuff. They say this one will come in with 20-30 mph wind behind it. The northeast part of the state is expected to get the worst of it with an inch or more of ice. The northeast part is the north georgia mountains so what gets broken may take weeks to repair. There's places up there that's hard to drive to on a sunny day.

Yes sir, there are NO shoulders on the roads, with very few exceptions. That was one of the first questions my family asked when they visited from Michigan, where are the shoulders??? They also thought they knew what humidity was.....

Not much into the bells and whistles on the new vehicles but I got accustomed to the heated seats pretty quickly and the heated steering wheel is a taste of heaven on these busted up old hands!

Amen to that! Don't know how I ever survived without heated seats and steering wheel!

Missouri has some very narrow roads with ditches where the shoulder of the roads is in most other places. LOL Them folks drive like they have a death wish driving on them way different than laid back SD. People see you coming here a quarter mile away the wait for you to pass by. In MO the no passing stripes on the curves is a challenge like the hunger games. crazy
