Look at the Henry single shot , I think it is a nicer gun than the CVA and for not that much more money.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

In either gun I would get something with some weight to it and the stock fits me.Both cartridges are great, the .37 Whelen is a fine elk caliber, the 45-70 is versitale and effective. Both can kick the snot out of you so light wippy guns are no fun. I have killed a lot of deer and such with hard cast bullets in the 45-70 I have found a bullet with a wide meplat to kill better than round nose, more soft tissue damage

.45-70 can be loaded down pretty mild, cowboy loads. I love the .45-70.

35 Whelen is a heck of a round. Both have the old timey cool factor and can be loaded up and down.

If you want to play with casts, the Govt is the way to go, but the Whelen is one of my favorites. Mine has shot great with all loads. Poor mans magnum. It and the 338-06 are sleepers that don't get the respect they should.

Buy both. laugh

grin I probably will end up with both just trying to figure out which first lol ! Actually now I think about it there a gun shop a little bit out of the way that had an H&R buffalo classic a while back....wonder if they still have it ?

I have a lot of experience with the .45-70 in Marlin 1895s and Ruger No1s. There is a good selection of ammo from the old black powder equivalent to wicked hard cast penetrators. Felt / perceived recoil is less with the No 1 which has less drop in the stock.

In Alaska when fishing in areas with many brown bears we sometimes carry a stainless 1895 with a short barrel loaded with the hot penetrators. This rifle is short and light so it has a muzzle brake to reduce muzzle jump and recoil from the very hot loads. Therefore, this rifle is very loud. We are very confident that it would stop a brown bear. When fishing in remote places in Canada we keep an 1895 in the boat because of the possibility of a rude black bear at a shore lunch location.

With the Hornady Leverevolution 325 grain bullet it is an excellent cartridge for our large deer here in Ohio. The tremendous hydrostatic shock - energy dump plus tissue damage plus blood loss causes even the biggest bucks to drop in their tracks. I share the opinion that this is more effective than a 12 gauge slug on deer.

I have no experience with the .35 Whelen so cannot compare them.[Linked Image]

Sounds like you've already made up your mind, but I've only shot a 45-70 at the range with a customer and didn't like the recoil much. I've hunted for years with a Whelen and love it. It is a re-barreled featherweight pre-64 and is a fairly light rifle as the stock is from a light piece of walnut. Recoil is no different from a 30-06 for me. I have to believe that any of the single shot rifles are going to have bigger recoil because of weight and stock dimensions.

I'm not a reloader, and ammo is easy for me here, as a lot of Basques brought back their Whelens from Nevada, Wyoming and Idaho, so every gun store sells them.

Enjoy whatever you buy.

My daughters 367 mag h and r is below moa at 100. Shoots pistol bullets better than a some bolt guns with hand loaded target rounds. Cousin had of there 2 20g rifled slug guns and they were also crazy accurate as was my brother inlaws in 12g. Only problem that I know of that's common and both my cousins and I had was the pin that holds the transfer bar in place breaking. My daughters did the week before deer season practicing.

I have never heard of one having accuracy problems. Now my oldest sons cva break action was vertical stringing about 8 inches. With most ammo until I tried the hornady 170 gr . Or whatever was causing the issue corrected itself at the same time. I have not shot anything else out of it since finding it shot that well. Groups improve when I got the suppressor on it. Since the hornady ammo is not giving the same result as the Winchester im going to see if it will group the Winchester before deer season comes in.
