I have a fairly large hand tool collection. $40k-$50k. Lots of ancillary things too like chainsaws , gensets , power tools , rigging equipment , fuel , supplies , lubricants , equipment , hardware etc , as well. This is for my use , not to used to supply the unprepared.
Funny how when people ask me to borrow these things , they don't exist or I am currently using them or a family member needs them or some other reason they are unavailable.
Only rarely do I loan out something. Only after much , much careful veting do I loan out something occasionally to a trusted friend , with tight conditions.
There is a big subset of people out there who spend their money on things they want but not investing their themselves and instead relying on others they can use/control. This is narcissistic behavior. I don't bend down to those who want to exploit you while paying as little as possible. These people have a list of mechanics , plumbers , electricians , etc they can call to get something cheap because they haven't invested in the skills to do it themselves.
I don't loan tools or equipment to these people. It almost always goes bad. You are chasing down your stuff ,which may be damaged or misused. I always have an excuse like , Home Depot has that truck or piece of power equipment for rent. A lot of major brands of automotive parts suppliers/sellers will rent out cheap or next to free hand tools. I referrer people to this instead of loaning out my stuff.

There are the users, and the givers. The users never give back, or learn to get themselves on track. The givers have to learn, not to be used!

Some small motors have a low oil shut off switch built into them. I have a standing rule, you brake it you replace it. Many years ago a friend ask to borrow a large live trap. I have lived in a small town all my life and everyone knows I trap animals. I told him not to shoot any animal in the trap, well did and hit one of the wires and it broke the wire. From that day on if anyone wants to borrow any trap it cost the $100.00 dollars. It is very easy, if the trap comes back damaged the trap is yours. Words for me.
