Since weather is brutal today, I figured I’d give this fly tying thing a try! Hardest parts for me were wrapping the hackle and figuring out how to do the whip finish.

Proved to be a little bit of a messy hobby! Feather fibers like to go everywhere!

That looks great. Is that a peacock hurl for tail? Thread body, grizzly hackle for both the wrap and a sort of parachute? That should catch trout!

Looks good Smasher! Some of my best producing patterns were those I developed on my own. Found that sub-surface offerings, like nymphs, were the most productive for me in the waters that I fished.

Looks like a trout killer! Mend your line to keep the drift speed consistent with the river flow and you’ll stack up fish. Nice work!!

Nice start. After about 1,000 more you'll "start" to get the hang of it! 2 tips: don't crowd the hook eye (I always have problems with that and makes building a good head tough), and get a cheap hackle gauge (shows what size hackle to use for the size of hook). Just cleaned my fly tying bench up yesterday so fly tying season is about to start.

I live 40 minutes from the San Juan river been fishing it since the 80s. Zone a guide on the river. If you guys are interested in flies that catch fish on the Juan and not just catch fishermen. I’m willing to share. Let me know.
