After this not so big storm, we are looking at getting a wall mounted propane heater to help knock the chill down in parts of the house that the wood stove does not reach. Probably wouldn’t be used too much, just when very old. I’ll probably buy a big tank and get on demand hot water as well. Vented/Unvented? I was told to NEVER run unvented in your house?? I’m just looking for one that takes up minimal space and would like a fan as well. With propane, I could run our generator as well when needed.

Uncle runs a mr. Heater, has had good luck so far. Has a built in fan to blow the warm out out as well.

They make a 30,000 btu flat wall mount one with an O2 shutoff on it a fan can be added for circulation. I’ve always heard about water in LP being a issue but never experienced any such thing with my unit.

I run a 45,000 BTU blue flame propane heater in my wood shop. It is the ventless type with low oxygen/CO2 shutoff.

My daughter has been having furnace issues during this cold snap and I'm considering getting one for her. I checked, they are rated for indoor use.

They do put a lot of moisture into the air. That might be a plus inside a house where winter humidity levels are typically very low. It sucks in my shop because of condensation on cast iron tool surfaces. That's why I'm going to be switching to a mini-split for heating and cooling.

Eh...wot?

We heat with wood mostly during cold weather. The house is a one level plus a finished basement. The wood stove is on the main level so not much heat from it gets to the basement. For a bit of extra heat in the finished basement we have unvented gas logs that are used occasionally, usually not more than an hour a day. Being unvented they do add moisture to the house, but that's no different than putting a pot of water on a wood stove to add moisture. For occasional use and with a wood stove as your primary, I would not worry about going unvented. If you want a heat source to be in continuous use I would go vented.

Even with the low 02 shut off on ventless heaters it’s a god idea to have a couple carbon monoxide detectors in the house/shop. All mechanical parts can fail, ya don’t want to risk everything on a cheap Chinese part. Odds are better if your redundant, with three cheap Chinese parts. grin

They make lots of units that are rated for indoor use and vent free. I call them blue flame heaters. Ran one in my shop for probably 10 years off of propane. It was not vented. Anytime you have a fossil fuel combustible unit I would recommend a CO detector or 2.

I still have a blue flame unvented propane heater in my shop. When I work on a snowmachine, chainsaw, or other small engine and start one indoors the 02 sensor shuts off the heater. Kind of a good test.

Following this thread.

I'm going to get an indoor propane heater for my shop as well.
I have a 30x40 area that is partitioned off that I use the most and would like to have some heat in it.

Had the LP heater I liked it but it was temporary until I put hydronic elements along one wall that hooked up to my outdoor boiler about 40 feet of 6 foot elements they are all laid out I just need to hook them up next.

Have a vent free propane fireplace. Use it to help the furnace when it gets below zero or if there is a power outage. Have a CO2 detector. Have sealed up all the cracks in this old farmhouse, as well as new windows, but there are probably enough drafts to help out with fresh air.
