I got a text that said I needed to keep their number incase I get picked for jury duty, I texted back and told them no way they would pick me don’t waste my time. I get another text that said I’m not being called to serve at this time. Then I got another text saying that the number did take incoming texts? LOL

Do you figure that you won't get picked because of being an LEO? My old man has been kicked out every time he's been called in, and always figured that it was due to his history working in corrections.

One side or the other would bump me I wouldn’t mind doing it but they prefer folks they can manipulate on a jury mostly. I’d notice the games being played that others might miss that could influence the rest of the jury. They can’t have that.

Two weeks ago was the first time I had Jury Duty and made it all the way to Jury Selection on a "Brandishing a Firearm" charge. I was also the first dismissed, I didnt know the first witness but I rabbit hunt with her husband and son, the second witness was the son. I do not know if they were prosecution or defense witnesses. I will find find next time we rabbit hunt. The guy was found Not Guilty.
I thought the whole process was interesting. Even when one lady did not show up, the sheriffs went to her work and brought her.
Paid $54, $40 for time $14 for travel expense.

I've been put on the list multiple times but never selected. My 30 years in law enforcement makes me unpopular with the defense.

Law Dog, were you surprised that a Turner County judge didn't move the triple homicide jury selection and trial out of that county even though a preliminary jury pool sample came back that about 25% of the people though the defendant was guilty already from what they know of the case? I was but in small population counties, its hard not to know about such cases, especially when the defendant held positions of power in a town in the south end of the county.

I know people personally impacted by both that case and the case involving the run over death of the Moody County deputy sheriff. That case is being done out of AG Jackley's office in Pierre. They are being handled very differently but both cases may finally reach trial this year after two years of the court processes.

I got a notice in the mail a while back it’s a courthouse number to call back. I can see them having me do the dance with no intention of me being picked they are getting paid to waste my time.

If the lawyers were involved in the survey that might have been the reason just my guess. They would need to support that decision or it gives the defense grounds for appeal when it’s over.

I was picked for jury duty 3 years ago there were about 50 of us sitting in the courtroom.after selecting the 1st 12 jurors and excusing 3 of them for whatever reason I was picked next.my mom had worked for the lawyer representing the plaintiff so I figured I would get the boot when the defense lawyer and judge found out.no such luck ended up being on the jury was only 3 days long trial .

Strangely, I get the notice almost every year.

I got it 2x last year.

Got selected and was on a jury in Dec.

Those that either don't want to be on it or know you won't be picked can just call the County Clerk or write it on the initial form. It's not a big deal that you are a cop or too cool for jury duty. You can just tell them you can' miss work or you have a baby at home. They don't care, as long as you respond.

I was one of the "magic 36" or so on the left side of the room (where they would pick the final 14 or so jurors) out of the approximately 75 people that were called down to be part of the pool. I felt sorry for the suckers on the right side of the room because it would take a gob of us on the left side to get kicked off before any or most of those people would fill voids that happened in the magic 36.

The case was about someone being charged with a felony for meth possession. I don't believe meth should be legalized but I thought it was a bit overkill to interrupt 75 people's lives to come down to the courthouse. I think they brought in 5 or 6 jury "panels" because the defendant was from a "special" class (not said out loud but...) and I guess the state wanted to make sure they had created a scene that the jury pool was deep, even if there was really almost no "special" people of this person's situation in those 60 or so people (about 15 people called never showed up for the jury pool which makes them on the naughty list of the court system). I suspect that the defendant wanted a jury trial because although this human probably was smoking some of the meth, it wasn't actually theirs.

Anyway, both lawyers asked us 36 general questions and we could reply if it pertained to us or if we had general questions back. The state's guy was a basic dweep, starting off with, 'does anyone think if driving over the speed limit is a crime" sort of logic that a law is a law. Later on, I responded to one of his questions by asking (using my juror number, I think I was #19), "does the state put this much effort into going after meth dealers as they are doing for a meth user..?" He didn't answer.

In the end, I think two of the magic 36 were recused and their voids filled by two people from the right side of the room. I was not asked to be on the jury (surprise). And to top if off, in a newer, multi million $$ courthouse for the largest populated county, they only had a single men's room on that floor with two urinals and a full toilet when they gave us a 10 minute break after the hour+ time of jury questioning but before the final jury was selected. I was a bit more nimble than many of the guys there so could go down a flight of stairs or so to another restroom but I felt bad for the older guys who probably couldn't do that and get back in 10 minutes or so.

I'm sure the defendant got convicted but I never check any court records later to see if that was the outcome of the case. In the three times I've made it into a courtroom in my county, I haven't seen a case where a good judge couldn't simply have said, "you have been a dumb ****, I fine you X amount of $, go and don't be a dumb **** again", although in this meth user case, the human probably needed some sort of serious counseling instead of jail time. Maybe.

Just to qualify my post above, I was selected to be on a jury and was further selected to be the jury foreman. Big mistake on the defenses part IMO.

Different rules for every state. Here in NY that don't care about your job.

I got called in to a jury pool of about 20 people. From there they drew about 8 names out of a hat. Those 8 immediately got dismissed. The trial was going to start right after the jury was choosen. I wasnt chosen, but just in case I wore a bright blaze orange shirt so I would stick out. My theory was I would be a distraction and overlooked. It worked, I was never picked.

You're not being singled out to be picked on. That's the way it is done for everybody.
