I'm guessing alternator

Grab a spare battery and swap it. Should get him 25 min home so you can address alternator and not pay for a tow.
Be good to have a new battery anyway once you replace the alternator.

They'll die going down the road if the battery gets low enough. Hope you brought your tow strap.

Doubt battery was completely dead. Did it run after it started ? If so doesn’t sound like alt and battery. Because it wouldn’t have ran Turn on head lights if it dies. Shoot it. Take him buy him a Chevy.

It's called load shedding. The body control module (or whatever Toyota calls it) shuts things off in order of priority as voltage drops, in an attempt to keep the important stuff running long enough to get you home. Starts with shutting off things like the radio, then gauges, last to go is the headlights, before it finally dies. Most all newer vehicles have it.

If it dies again, make sure he don't run anything more than the headlights, no fan, radio, etc.... It'll go a little further.

A $35 code reader that you use with your cell phone was one of the best tools I have ever purchased. Very simple to use and it only takes a few minutes to read.

Simple matter to have it checked. Take it off and back to where you bought it. They can put it on the tester and tell you if it is good or not. Warranty it out for you if it is.

A loose battery cable will cause that to happen also.
Corrosion of the cables will also interfere with the power flow .

I've had that happen , just take it back, sometimes they're bad from the factory.

If the alternator is bad, swap the battery in your vehicle with his. You'll charge his battery while he drains yours. During the day, you can get as far as you need to like this, swapping back and forth. At night the headlights will drain it quicker. But you should be able to get home doing tihs.
