How do you like to bed traps in snow? Do you use anything underneath and/or anything as a pan cover when covering with snow?

Right now, same as BC2. But I just bought a roll of the super thin produce bags off Amazon to try out. NothernTrapper Jason said he poked a few hole is the bag before sliding his trap in to ensure it breaks apart when fired. I’ve seen them bags hold a bunch of snow and look like a stuffed sausage if they’re too strong.

Id stick to your wax dirt and flake antifreeze to bed and a light sifting of snow on top just to blend, I always noticed using wax paper it tries to grab all the snow and dirt while firing causing some potential missed opportunities.

I’ve used a stiff metal screen cover that goes over the pan but under the jaws. Then I cover with dried grass ala Mark Zagger’s pipe dream set. The notches for the springs and the edges of the trap bed are sprayed with a 50/50 or 60/40 mixture of glycol. A little tamping of the jaw edge dirt, with my hammer gives a firm set. Since the trap is suspended above the bottom of the trap bed, there’s no need to worry about freeze down.

If I ever go back to coyote trapping in snow, I’ll use Saran Wrap or Walmart plastic under. A layer over. And finish with dried grass and very little snow.

Snaring solves most problems freeze-thaw conditions create.

All those northern guys swear by those produce bags. Back when they first opened a wolf season down here, practically everybody that tried trapping wolves in the snow the first year or two tried them. And most of them (myself included) lost wolves because of them. I always figured the extreme cold caused them to be more brittle up north and not create the sausage (or full diaper, as one trapper described them) effect, but according to AV they worked well in his warmer, freeze/thaw conditions, so maybe they just use a more brittle produce bag in Alaska.

I know exactly what you mean. Stan Forsyth has a name for them and buys them bulk, but doesn’t say from where. The produce bags I got aff Amazon are super thin so they might work, I’ll stab some holes in them to make sure though. I’ve never connected on wolf with the bags, only fox & coyote. Wax paper hasn’t let me down, having said that……my traps are all waxed also.

https://youtu.be/nTnS03bB6fU?si=bCToBiApwrjCKhLU Seldom fales does a neat method with foam… I’m in SW New York and I use produce bags off Amazon and wax dirt and have no issues with fox or yotes.. I avoid salt at all cost cause the deer population is so high around here they find the set the first night and step all over it! Hard to see but if you look close you can see the red fox biting the bag around a Duke 450 .. had no problem with bag and waxed dirt

I use something similar to the underlayment for laminate flooring. Use a drywall circle cutter set to your desired diameter. Cut several layers at a time. Use one above and one below. They also help to insulate in the spring long sunlight days.
If you cut to just the outside diameter of the jaws, when the foot drops the pan the cover and snow wash out under the jaws. That was the problem I had with produce bags balling up snow, and slowing the firing. The snow here is typically wet and heavy. Produce bags tear much easier in zero or below temps, but then your snow is powder then as well.

You can also find that material on the LP Smartside prefinished siding.

Sidenote, that material holds scent well so be clean. I got lazy one night and did not change out my wet gloves after setting a number of traps. Next check I caught two wolves, and had two pan covers neatly removed and shredded. As well as the small bait piece eaten from the post.
