So are you all just putting up your tails?
Or still putting up the whole Skunk.

Watched a utube that said if you take tails off,
they have plenty of no tailed pelts.

Thanks Chad,

Put up the whole skunk, there is more than just the tail market out there.
Maximize your furs potential. Skunks are very easy to skin, flesh and stretch.

You need to remember, the buyers are looking for specific skunk tails. Not all skunk tails are created equal.

If you put up just the tail and it turns out to have little or no value, you have nothing left of value. There are hundreds (maybe more) of tailless skunk pelts available.

Put up the entire pelt with tail attached.

I’ve been struggling with these new options I’ve got a few different outlets for mine so it’s not as simple as you would expect. The huge ones could go fot hats, taxi market or tanning. Some have good tails and off tinted stripes nothing terrible just off a little. The smaller ones are easier to decide on with less options for them good tails with off stripes will be tails all day long then with less market options. Small/medium taxi or tail depends not many of those around this year.

Going to work on some if it warms up a bit in the shed today and tomorrow’s going to be warmer I need to catch up. I have 2 in a plastic bag in the bath tub that didn’t spray. They should be thawed out soon at least I can get them podded and pelted a few ant an time everyday warm spell ahead.

I could use the fat anyway they are still packing a lot of fat because it’s been so mild this winter.

Thanks, gonna put most of them up like I have in the past.

Got 2 a road kill that's worst then I thought and one a hunter shot in the trap.

I'm like Jerry I need the fat anyway.

To you guys who use the fat, the place that was going to buy my skunk fat said they’d only take it if it was sun rendered. It’s more work than I want to do. The half gallon in my freezer is probably going to go out with the garbage.

Do you use skunk fat for boot waterproofing, lures or baits? Or who buys it from you?

Sun rendering is easier than heat rendering lots of uses for either one.

Years ago a friend sold the rendered fat to Dave Hicks who sold to horse people, I think Saratoga track!? He used an electric fry pan to render it.

Crock pots can get the fat boiling well. Separation of the fat from the oil is not easy and probably not worth it if it gets cool it will fog up. The grease is a great lure base but you don’t get as much as might want to get from a batch. A great paste base for lures its freeze resistant for being a fat.

Heat rendered oil is pretty mild almost cooking oil comparable but a good natural lure base love the fat to work with its very creamy stuff. Heat rendered oil is more of a ingredient with a natural taint to it but can be used as a base also.
