How close do you put castor mounds to each other on a colony or stretch of river for traveling beaver and how many different lures do you use?

I set every haul out and point. And if they have a mound, I will make one right next to theirs, only 3 times the size.

I use the castor out of the beavers I catch. The number of sets depends on the situation. I'm a river trapper. I trap a lot of islands. Access to deep water is major one. Sometimes I have some, sometimes note enough, and sometimes too much. Typically I have a drowning rod on either side of hut. I also like to put in set directly across from a hut. I also like to put sets in on points of the islands. I hope this helps,

I trap creeks mostly. When I do I place castor mounds in parallel to the dominant wind direction. We have mostly nw winds, some se in the spring. So I will set one and set another either nw or south east of that one depending on the way the creek runs. That way you almost always have a set blowing that castor across the open water.

North Idaho beaver are lazy, they don't build big enough dams in these little creeks to provide much water deep enough to drown them in. So often the primary factor on where I put a castor mound is often drowning depth water.

We always build two fake slides with a little mound near the top of the slide. The slides are far enough apart so the snared beavers can't reach one another. A different castor based lure on each slide. We do this at every bridge that has water deep enough for a beaver to swim in, with or without any beaver sign. There's a little more to it, but that's the basics.

Set every few miles weather you have sign or not, prevailing wind side of creeks and streams during dispersal…as ice out commences to catch moving beaver before they enter other colonies and get bit up. Not necessary to trap colonies as I would just like to catch the two year old ( fast skinning money beaver) and leave the breeding pair alone…you’ll catch plenty of those anyway. Large gaudy time consuming castor mound isn’t necessary for what I’m doing.
