My first thought was just that. I had horses when I was a young man, rode all the time. One thing I never did was shoot off their backs while riding for that fear of doing just that.

I guess as long as your shots are all to the side you would be relatively safe. Not sure how much that horse liked those shots going off so close to its head.

Cowboy Mounted Shooting Sports typically use 45 Colt. In completion it's black powder blanks for safety.

It's an 1873 Winchester clone. Originals were never chambered in .45 Colt but the replicas are.
Original calibers were .32-20, .38-40, and .44-40. Any would be loud that close to the horses head.
