Frozen pizza! That's great!! I have heard, (on this site, I think), of trappers in very cold country drilling a hole in the ice and putting the end of the trap chain in the hole and filling it with water, thus creating an "Earth Anchor". Pretty clever. The late Ben Hopsen Jr showed us that technique when he taught at the ATA Wolf School many years ago. He carried a themos full of warm water on his snogo with him, for just that purpose. Even if you are not in "open country" it works great out on river ice. Ben was the best "open country" wolf trapper I have known. (Although I hasten to add that his son B3 is no slouch!) Pete

Since I have been on the ice for the majority of my trapping endeavors, I have avoided dragging around cargo sleds as much as possible, which I know would have made many of my "bad ice" issues much worse. But, then not having one makes trying to carry everything I might need an issue. And worse, is trying to haul everything home if you've had a good day on the line. But, with careful measurments when making a cargo box on the back, it's surprising how much a person can haul with no cargo sled, if you have to,... ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/02/full-20421-284895-65_large.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/02/full-20421-284896-67_large.jpg) But no matter what, watch what you're doing so you don't run over things like this and get them jammed up in your track,.. like I kinda did here, since it was 99% buried in the trail. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2026/02/full-20421-284897-a126_large.jpg)
