Was listening to a civil war podcast yesterday while finishing fur,,, and the New York riots came up.
Although I remembered the highlights of it… this podcast covered some things I didn’t know.
Black folks were actually hunted down and were killed in various ways of public executions,,, some were hanged, some were even set on fire and burned alive.
The riots were pretty much over the draft, and things were made even worse if an individual had 300 dollars they could find a substitute… which was then called a rich man’s war and a poor man’s fight.

Blaming it on the black people… and saying if the blacks wanted freedom, they should go do it themselves.
Even abolitionists were targeted,,,
Federal armies were brought in and yup,,, they actually shot and killed rioters.
Rioters charged the army several times,, even into the gunfire.
There was even bets going on, who would win particular skirmishes.
Absolutely wild.

I can’t even imagine how the news would handle stuff like that today.

Now do the elected Maryland government's vote on seccession?

Lincoln was a dictator and violator of the Constitution.

Rubber bullets, sonic wave technology, dogs, water hoses, etc...need to stop these protesters from setting the tone for future events.
What happened to peaceful protests as assigned by law? What a mess!

11 blacks were killed and 108 or 109 whites, in a predominantly black area containing tens of thousands of blacks. You are seeing history being written. Most articles now say 119 or 120 were killed, followed by the word blacks in the next sentence, which is a deliberate attempt to trick the readers into inferring the killed were all black. The blacks rioted too and suffered much less for it.

Overall the riots had very little to do with race. They were almost entirely over working class, white immigrant men angered over being drafted for a war they didn't support.

Compared to not a single such riot in the south. Not even among the free blacks among which there was a strong measure of support for the Confederacy to include volunteering to fight.

Tell us again how Lincoln "saved" the union?

Warrior, you certainly made an interesting point.
There wasn’t any riots that I’m aware of during that period.

The Southern Bread Riots took place in 1863 too, in a lot of major Southern cities including Salisbury, Mobile, High Point, Raleigh, Petersburg and even Richmond.

Apparently, The New York Times kept their building from being burned by the mob by the staff using gatling guns they happened to have. The second amendment was a little broader back then I guess.

Differing reason. It wasn't due to lack of support of the war but that of lack of food.

My Irish ancestors came here for a better life, not to be the government's cannon fodder. Especially when the wealthier natives could buy their way out of the war.

The south also had ways to pay to get out, plus if you owned 20 or more slaves you were exempted from service also calling it a rich man's war and a poor mans fight. The draft was extremely unsuccuessull in both the north and the south. In the north there were only about 150K that were drafted and 120k of those were replacements or those that took the $200-$300. That wa out of well over 1 million who served. The Homestead Act was passed in 1862, at the time another incentive for men to join the army as they could reduce the years to obtain ownership of their 160 acres. My mothers grandfather was injured and got his acres in 2 instead of 5 years.

Yes, the south had the same issue of being able to buy your way out BUT considering leaving the 20 slaves unattended was not wise at best and that undoubtedly twenty of them were an economic unit of production of some sort it might not be a good idea of busting up economic activity in time of need. Also there were numerous examples all across the south where shirkers met with vigilante justice at the hands of locals. The dynamics and opinions of the populace were vastly different north and south.
