Caught a coyote yesterday in a snare- Hip caught and hung over a fence. Skinned him out yesterday and this morning when I went to turn him fur out there was a bald spot of hair slip on the lower belly, about the size of a mans hand. I cut it all away and sewed up the hole with size 0 suture.

But since some slipped will the rest? Is it worth trying to salvage these or do you pitch them?

Are you sure It was a slip and not a rub? Maybe that fur got rubbed off when it hung on the fence.

It sounds like a rub mark. Or a spot of mange. I had a coyote 3 years ago that had a silver dollar sized mange spot on the flank. The dealer didn’t downgrade the pelt because there was no other sign of it. Catch them in December. Coyote pelts will be better then.

Was the hide green/brown where it slipped? If so look for any other areas that are discolored. Did he have a busted gut from the snare? Leaking stomach acid on the inside of the hide can cause slippage really fast. I'm assuming he is already fleshed. You've already sewn up the bad spot and fleshed it, I'd go ahead and stretch it and see how it turns out, you've already did 90% of the work. If there are any other discolored (green belly) spots on him, spray them with Lysol, this will kill the bacteria and stop the degradation.

Dead predators with meat in their belly can green belly really fast. I'm aware of the check laws for lethal sets in Wyoming, but I wouldn't leave them too long between checks with this warm weather. Likely the slip spot (if it was a slip and not a rub as Beav states) was where he was folded over the fence or snare and didn't cool out fast enough, with meat in his belly.

The fur was just pulling out in glob's this morning, I noticed some blackish discoloration in that spot last night but didnt think much of it and figured he was just bruised up from the snare around that area. Ive been checking that snare line every couple days since its been so warm but he could have been hanging for a day or so.

Coyote don't stay good very long if they are dead in a snare. Even with the cold temps here we might start having problems in 24hrs. or more after the catch.

Heres a picture of the area, the spot I cut out was thin skin completely absent of any hair this is whats left, just on the belly, back looks fine and no hair release when tugged on. [Linked Image]

How does it smell? I found that there’s green belly, which is ok, then it goes brownish or even darker which is taint. The smell is a lot worse than green belly. Had a wolf tainted with clumps of hair falling out wherever the skin was dark brown.
The only time I haven’t seen green belly is when the wolf or coyote get wacked when it’s super cold and freeze within hours. Them stomach acids don’t stop working after death, blood flow stops and the gunk in there just keeps working but good cold temps will usually slow that clock. All depends how full the belly is too.

Nothing turns faster than a coyote.

With the temps we’ve had the past week, any coyote in direct sunlight is gonna be toast in 48 hours if the eagles don’t get to it first.

Finish it, if anything it’ll be a learning experience what you can and can’t get away with.

Anything green I immediately spray down liberally with Lysol (kills 99% of bacteria and its bacteria that gives us grief in this department).

I than hose it down again after fleshing, make sure that leather gets a good coat.

Green isn’t a problem. But when that green starts turning a yellow/brown/purple, now you’re definitely in the danger zone for slippage.

I have noticed that if another coyote bit them up while in the snare those spots can turn fast also.
