I wish I could remember the kind buyer's name back in1975. I had a mink, (my first fur was a muskrat I skinned open and proudly pinned and dried on my bedroom wall. Yes, dried to my wall!), I case skinned and put the mink up on a 3/4" pine board I made with my dad's jig saw. I didn't know about a wedge, and when I couldn't get it off the board, I just took my boy scout jack knife and slit it up the belly. I got an address from a friend whose dad trapped, and so I wrapped the pelt in a cut up brown grocery bag and sent it to him with thoughts of riches. He lived in Salem, Oregon. About a week later, I got a check for .50, and a page with proper skinning and stretching instructions with a handwritten note telling me to keep trying. Bless his soul. Barry, was that by chance RC Rose in Salem? Chuck and I were selling him stuff in late 70's.

My first furs I caught 50 yrs ago I sold to Runigans out of Fergus Falls Mn.
The first castor that I shipped to a country buyer (vs a fur auction) was Runnigan. Very first time I talked to him I asked about prices and was happy with what he had to say so I agreed to ship to him. He asked me how many lbs I was shipping and what my address was. Thought that was kind of weird...when about 5 days later I get a check in the mail for what I said I was shipping! I always wondered if his wife beat on him for doing stuff like that. Mine sure would have.

First eh? In the late 50’s I stood in line at the Sears & Roebuck store every Saturday morning with my grocery sack of rats to ship to New York. I can’t remember if my little checks came from Sears or Taylor, I think Sears. It was about the only thing my dad did with me that involved trapping, drove me to town so I could send my pelts off and that was enough.

My brother and I sold our first furs, muskrats, to a guy named Charlie Winters in Reinholds, Pennsylvania. He was my dad’s fur dealer when he was a kid so Charlie was pretty old by the time my brother and I started selling to him.
There was an article done about Charlie in FFG magazine a couple of years ago. I contacted the author to see if I could get any more information but, it turned out, I don’t think he actually ever knew Charlie because he had very little information to offer. It was kind of disappointing.
Eh...wot?
