Do you have open water there?

The rivers froze over here.

light open spots in Riffles, basically no open water. Was looking for where they have skidded over the ice to the next open spot, the streaks they leave in the silt and signs up on land. Nothing.....jk

Since we’ve had snow cover most of the winter, it’s been great conditions for otter scouting. And I’ve found lots of sign. Mostly tracks. A few slides and some old beaver bank holes with some otter activity.

I took the battery chainsaw out a couple days ago and cut out the ice at a couple of the bank holes. Set two of them up with 330s. I’ve caught two otters from one of those holes in the past .

Not a lot of open water this season. If I can avoid it, I don’t like to set footholds without a drowning cable.

It’s tough here in Pa…..limited areas open to trap ( with a $6.97 permit ), limit of one otter, a week long season, and a five trap limit, of which, only two can be body grippers.

Do northern trappers (where lots of snow is normal) see the toilets go dead when covered with snow?

Walked 5 miles Thursday in 12-14” of snow checking on the same 4 otter toilets I’ve been trapping for the last 5 years. Lots of ice and no sign since the big snow last month.

Just set for nuisance beaver and your traps will be full of otter…..

I wonder if there will be enough coffee and middle fingers to make it through the day.

just like beaver, PA doesn't want you to actually KILL one...they want to sell you the CHANCE to kill one.

and just like the casinos, the rules/odds always favor the House.

Im not sure. Something popped it's head through thin ice at the one run I set. Beaver are a ways away so I'm hoping it was an otter. Killed one earlier in a muskrat set, lol.

Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

Why would they wait until the middle of February to open your otter season; crazy.

Zoo tag.
I'd be looking at the trout stocking schedule.
That's where I notice them at this time.
Good luck.

Same here. Spent 6 hrs walking rivers and streams Saturday in a foot of snow, and not a single sign. No slides, no toilets, nothing. Some places had some open water and Nada.

Found where one played at a dam this morning. Almost no way to trap though. Maybe I will put a fisher box under the bridge downstream this afternoon. Sardines is what I got for bait.

While muskrat trapping would be the logical time to allow you to keep one.
