I work for a city here in SE Nebraska... for the Board of Public Works. I am in the Wastewater Pollution Control dept. I have a regular day shift.... from 7 to 3. But you are expected to go no matter what the time. We helped the street dept push snow or pick up trees after a storm.... we helped the water dept vac looking for pipes or lines.... we helped the elec dept vac looking for elec lines. And if thet phone rang anywhere during the 24 hrs of a day .... you go. It could be a lift station alarm or failure, a plant system failure or a backed up sewer in a residence (homeowners are told to call us first in case our main is plugged, not the private tap). I've been called out in blizzards, thunderstorms, floods, after tornados... In the middle of the nite... etc. But after almost 20 years I am going to be officially done. At almost 69 years old and after my 2nd back surgery ..... as soon as my banked up sick time and vacation time is used up, I am retiring !

I use too! Worked all days and was on call 24/7/365. Worked many times straight 24 to 36 hours and weekends was a given you worked at any time and many hours straight. After 36 years of not having a life I threw in the towel and never been so happy with my time and I told myself. I would never be bored a day in my life.

Im scheduled 12 hr rotating shifts. Here is my basic 4 week repeating schedule. Often i goes in early or stay out late 4 hr making for 16 hr shifts and I work a lot of days scheduled off. But also get a lot of days I can take off a month if I want

Days 7am-7pm Mon, Tues, Wed, Thurs. Then im off 7 days scheduled back on
Nights 7pm -7am Friday, sat, sun, mon. For 3 days tues wensday Thursday ( this is the week im on now) back to work on days 7am to 7pm Friday , Saturday, Sunday, then off one day on Monday back to work 7pm to 7 am Tuesday wensday, Thursday. Off 3 days then back To 4 days 7 am to 7 pm Monday through Thursday then off 7 days.

Typically I work 16 hr days every day its offered and thats most days. Today was an exception since it was a Holliday I was not offered out lates or in early. Guys on their days off can in when called since call in on Holliday is triple time and a half. I will get double time and a half tonight for Holliday pay and probably a 4 hour out late at time and a half.

so I can have 7 days off in a roll each month 2 3 days chunks off and one day and a half day off. But the dayasm off coming off nights are useless so not as good as it sounds. I have been Typically working 6 or 7 of my days off usually the first two or 3 of my 7 off still getting 4 day's in a roll off and geting a nice pay check except when im on vacation/hunting seasion or the family has things going on.

I also have 4 weeks vacation so even though I work a lot of long days I have a lot of flexibility and still have more full days off than most people get. It sure is hard on the body not having a steady schedule geting older and add MS on top so im working on cutting back.

Also use to.
Retired after 27 yrs of service.
Regular 24 hr shift paid for 16 but made to work the whole 24 of needed, then off for either 12 or 24 then back on again. Days off weren't really an option as I was 1 of 2 volunteers on my end of the county so I was always on call. When covid hit I beat/set the department record of 52 days straight. Not allowed to leave other than to the store if it was open. Only complaint is for every 24 hr shift was only paid for 16 with no OT.
Only thing I would do again is all of it.
But still won't go back as long as I can trap, fish & hunt...

Ya can't miss fur if yur traps are out somewhere.

When I worked in the oil field, I worked 12 days on and 3 days off. If they had no relief for you, you had to work the next 12 days to get only 3 days off. When the big layoffs hit 85/86, I worked 6 months without a day off. Made a ton of money but you get burned out.
