Same year NewHouse114 and I started trapping together in college. Good times. Nutria and coon lines.

I'm sure I was weaned by then but I would have still been ticked about it!

Be careful what you wish for! Those days of wine and roses had a few thorns.

I'd be willing to get a few paper cuts counting money like that again

I agree. Competition and thieves were everywhere. I don’t need the money nowadays, it’s much more pleasant to trap today than the circus of the late 70s, early 80s.

I remember checking coon traps in the dark in a state park in 1979. There were a half dozen vehicles checking traps on the same stretch of road. Every culvert had trappers working them, some had several guys setting at the same stop.

Once I saw a woman, with a robe on, shining a flashlight from the berm of the road. I stopped to see if there was a problem….she said she was checking traps for her husband.

I agree. You would be in hog heaven if today's prices were a quarter of those inflation adjusted prices. I wouldn't looks like marten prices were average. smile

I was working in the mines back in those days. I’d take my two weeks vacation in the Pa rat season. I’d make more money in those two weeks than I would have made in over a month in the mines. Rats were paying $8.50 in 1979, and I caught 60 on the opening night. One night catch equaled nearly what I’d take home from a two week paycheck.

A lot of new trappers were born back then stories of guys putting themselves through school or buying new vehicles was common. 2 fox were better then a days wages for a lot of folks a couple days rat trapping was a weeks wages it was great.

$20.00 was worth $116.68 in today's money in 1976, so an average coon was worth about $117.00.
