I have four DPs with caps spread out across the wooded section of a customer's backyard. They are baited with dry cat food with a little bacon grease for attractant. The first check I caught one raccoon and the other traps were untouched. On todays check, three of four caps were removed, some bait gone, but not catches. What animal besides a raccoon could/would do this? I was thinking skunk or possum but did not think they had the dexterity to do this.

Thanks to the knowledge base.

I doubt pack rats. I went to caps this year because I’m over run with them and fought them constantly last year. Either cleaning my DPs out or getting head caught. Despite a lot of pack rat tracks I never had one get the cap off. They licked the trailing scent off but didn’t get the caps off.

Trail cameras and fresh snow have broke a lot of trapper’s hearts.

Sounds like squirrels to me.

I agree and even a skunk. At this point go to foot hold or cage. This time of year try some kind of gland lure. These guys can tell you what to try.

With bacon grease I wouldn't rule out dogs, cats, possum, skunk, coon, fox, and squirrel. I use fryer oil and have seen them all spend a considerable amount of time messing with DPs. Set up a camera and let us know.
