The thread about Dieing Art/Crafts got me thinking. Especially the orginal part about old hay balers..
It's been many years since I have been close enough to one of the older balers to hear it run. Thing is it is one of the sound from my youth, I can hear in my mind. The old balers I worked around. They had a rhythm to them when they were running just right. The hay was right and the speed was right. So many rounds with the plunger. Then the needle moving up and knotters going.

So that sound and the rhythm of it has long been in my head. Think about it I can hear it now.

Another although I never milked cows. I was around them enough so I can hear that milker rhythm. Not talking about the drone of the vacuum pump that was common if outside. But the almost soothing swish sound of the milkers them selves.

It's funny. A few minutes ago I couldn't remember if I fed my dog this morning.

Yet I can easily recall the rhythmic sound of my track shoes when in high school. They made certian crunching sound on old cinder track. I listened to that crunch to get my pace right.

Man I got a whole list if I wanted to keep going.

Anyone else have sound with a specific rhythm you can easily recall.

The drone of a DC-3 plane at steady speed.

Steady rhythm of horses chewing . The sound of trotting for miles at a time.

A V8 engine with glass packs idling.

Snowshoeing in deep snow.

A Huey in flight.

I grew up with the Chippewa river 3 blocks east and Half Moon lake 1 block west. Those are where I spent .most of my free time when on the Chippewa fishing ,trapping, or just hanging out with my friends. Straight across the river
was a scrap metal operation ran by one of Eau Claire's most successful business men. All day long the large crane they used was scraping and banging as it loaded and unloaded trucks and railcars. You knew when the business day was over as the crane would be silent. This corresponded with the rise and fall of the river which was regulated by the paper mill. The noon whistle from the mill is still a sound I can hear like it was yesterday. Time frame would be 1950's and sixties. Not alot of rhythm but sounds i still remember.

I live in oil field country. The old oil pump motors could be heard from a long distance. I lived on the edge of town, but you could hear them loud and clear in the still of the night. I can still hear that sound rhythm in my head.

How about the funky whirling sound Mitchell 300 makes on steady retrieve?
I still have two on couple old true temper fiber glass rods.

Not many sounds for me. More smells. But the one sound I will always remember is my grandpa's shuffling walk. The way his shoe heels would drag a bit on the pavement when he walked.

Redwing blackbirds singing when they return....its not spring around here until I hear them.
As another mentioned, had oil wells near our cottage growing up....rythmic popping put me to sleep and brings back fond memories from that era.

i coon hunted growing up and the sound I remember is metallic self feeders in the distance. Sometimes the sounds could be heard from several directions. When the local farmers stopped raising hogs, midwinter nights never sounded right to me.

I worked for a hog breeder from age 16 until I graduated high school. Then my younger brother took over.
So when you say metalic feeders. I take it you mean that sound the lids make when hog flips them open, or let's them drop shut. I'm pretty sure some the hog were slamming them just to make noise.

Also listen to the catfish hit the top of the water when grandpa through hound dog food out nightly, they would start rolling before we got there, not sure if they heard his Cadillac driving through the field or if it was just a timing thing. But he would throw and the the dog food would pop the water and you hear the fish bloop and splash.

An old Coleman lantern hissing away on low all night when camping. By wee morning hours the hiss would get very faint with the occasional soft putter putter pop pop as the flame fought for mor fuel/pressure.

My father had a 990 international haybine with steel rollers. I can hear it's sing as I type this. Many hours spent on the fender of a Ford 5000 until I was old enough to be more useful.
