Do you guys wash them before or after skinning? Found a nice road kill but he has sprayed didn't know if I should wash him hang him up to dry and then skin? Or go ahead and skin him then wash him?

I find It better to wash before you skin. The carcass keeps the fur from folding up and it will wash and dry better. If you have air compressor you can blow dry those critters in a few minutes.

I’d get away from the main stink as soon as I could then decide if I’m keeling the hide or just the tail before I started washing and fleshing it

My experience with roadkills is that the internal organs are badly scrambled and the backbones are broken. For a roadkill, I’d suggest spraying heavily with peroxide, baking soda and Dawn solution before and washing it in this solution after. Note: don’t be wearing leather when doing it. The stink will be absorbed by the leather and will take 2-weeks to be usable again.

Thanks guys this is the second one this week that got clipped on the head. For better or worse I have a cold and am all plugged up and can't smell anything. I washed the last one and hung it up put the fan on it and skinned it. Came out good. I figure I will err on the side of caution and skin them out. I hate to get just the tail and it isnt a good tail. I was just wondering if I was doing it right.

Back when fur was worth something I never passed up a road killed coon, fox, mink, but today I would have to be really hungry to pick up a road killed skunk and put it up no matter how valuable it is and I like the faint distant smell of a skunk. I have a lot of respect for those that can do it.
