Idaho I am guessing this dog was 35 plus I am only judging from picking him up with a catch pole and by the back legs. We have some big ones here. I am currently dealing with warm weather in the 80s and trying to keep my sets working, because of the red ants clogging up my holes even the lure holes. And of course Monday when I have to go back to wort it is going to be in the 30s.

Caught these two young dogs this morning and a coon . Both on posthole sets. Need one more in the morning to make my goal of 10 for the week. If not I still had a good week.

You are doing awesome. Consistently catching. I'd say it's been a good week.

Slip, try using a piece of pic in your hole to beat the ants. I have used white, gray and black coyotes didn't seem to care.

Slipknot,
The post hole set you're referring to is a straight down/90° hole?

SW it is straight down 12 to 18 inches . I use a post hole digger most are pre baited. I checked the holes and set a trap on top the side the coyote is working from.I have put them in and set and had first night catches several times.

Have you ever tried setting the trap down in the post hole? The few times I've used a posthole I've set on top like you do, but I know guys trapping around stock often set their traps down in the hole on top of the bait to avoid stock.

I set mine like bearcat described and had good results....I placed my skunk or mink smelling lure in a small hole above my trap.
Be sure to run a longer chain to allow trap to be pulled out hole so predator can have freedom to run around.

I have heard about what you are referring to but have never set one in the bottom of a hole. I have one place that has cattle but can generally can work around different pastures.i may have to try it one day. I was off a week and was able to run a variety of sets this week. My main reason for running postholes prebaited is time. I am off Friday thru Sun. And two night sets can be unproductive sometimes. When I went to prebaiting my catch went up a good bit.
