A friend got a mostly white skunk and asked me if I could tan it. It sprayed and he did not wash it before skinning. Took it out of the freezer and it's ripe. Peroxide/baking soda/soap bath before fleshing? It's thawing outside right now in an enclosed container.

You becha. Quart of peroxide, cup of baking soda and a tablespoon or so of Dawn dish wash liquid. Mix together and put the sucker in it. I have always found it much more successful if I get the fur good and saturated with the mixture and just leave it in the bucket for 15-20 min. The mixture foams up and penetrates the fur right to the skin when that happens. Take it out and rinse it off with fresh water, hang it and let the fur dry as long as you can then flesh it. I know the conventional method it to board it with fur in. I don't do that, the fur is usually still damp from the washing and I flesh, put in my borax tub and get borax on every part of the flesh side paying particular attention to the thicker areas around the head. I shake it off turn it fur side out, shake it again and put in on a board. It takes a few days longer to dry but it works for me.

I have tried some of the premix solutions like Poof or whatever it is called but it has never come close to the peroxide, baking soda. dawn mix. The peroxide mix is not that expensive.

I know the OP did not have the option, but I run mine through the process on the carcass. I find it is a lot easier to get them dry on the carcass.

I have tried several commercial brands. Nothing works better than the peroxide formula. Just mix up and let them soak for 15-20 minutes.

So no water to the mix then? That must be what I’m doing wrong adding water to it. I have 4 to skin in the morning I’ll mix some up without water

Absolutely no water. You are setting up a chemical reaction between the peroxide and baking soda. The mixture makes pure oxygen, that's what the foam is caused by, bubbles of oxygen in the liquid. Little bubbles of oxygen, kind of like bubbles in a beer. The oxygen kills the skunk smell. You can use the same mixture on a dog if it gets sprayed by a skunk. The Dawn dish wash liquid is to cut through the natural oil in the fur so the oxygen can penetrate and get to all the smell and eliminate it.

The reaction also produces heat so and that helps with the Dawn doing it's part in the process.

Be sure and get the mixture on every part of the skunk quickly and then let it sit 15-20 min. while the chemical reaction takes place. The foam will fill most of a five gallon bucket and that's what you want to work on the skunk. Won't hurt to move the skunk around, turn it over or what have you while the process is on going.

Water (H2O) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) differ primarily by one oxygen atom, which makes peroxide a highly reactive oxidizing agent, whereas water is stable and inert. Water is a simple structure, while peroxide has a structure with a weak, easily broken oxygen-oxygen bond, causing it to decompose into water and oxygen.

That bubbling that Mac describes is the peroxide losing the extra Oxygen atom and what is left is just water.

The brown bottle Peroxide is not that expensive. If you want more volume, add another quart. Adding water just weakens the solution.
